      Nightmares!

Why do we have nightmares? What is our minds problem, scaring the shit out of itself? They don't seem to do anything to help me, and I don't want 'em, so why do the still occur? I doesn't really make sense...

I believe all dreams have a purpose. Who knows what in every case, but I believe that from a psychological standpoint, it's just the mind trying to work out some stuff. Release tension. Deal with repressed issues.

      Somethin' like that.

Personally, I wish I'd have more nightmares.

I dont belive nightmares have a purpose.

Usually my dreams reflect what I read/post on these forums, So,

      I'll conduct a little experiment:

I'll post that I dont have a nightmares where I'm scared shitless and only can run/hide from something.

My mind will disagree with me and will prove that my dreams can be scary beyond belief...

let's see if I'll have a nightmare tonighT

Usually, when I have nightmares, they are about losing someone/something that I love. I suppose that that means something, but I'm still sticking with "No Purpose".

Like Ophelia, I believe they have a purpose...
I think ALL dreams have a purpose (there is always method to "madness")

What their purpose is is another question altogether.
      I have a love/hate relationship with nightmares:
I hate them while they're happening, yet find them to be valuable afterwards in that I learn a lot about myself and my subconscious.

Yeah I don't have enough either!!! Makes the dream world exciting!!!!

Well what I think really nighmares are... is like someone already said, your brain trying to work through stuff. But I voted no purpose because there is often no rhyme or reason to when or what your nightmare is about. Sometimes there is. Oh well how knows... Have fun with them and realize that it is only a dream!

What kind of nightmares do you have that you like? I know there are many different kinds of nightmares. My favorite part of nightmares are waking up from them.

Violent nightmares are the surest way to a lucid dream for me - and once lucid, its definitely not scary any more. The violence turns 180 if you know what I mean

Meh, nightmares do have a meaning, by the way, some websites that I go to say that is you go lucid in a nightmare, you can ask for a presant and you will get one, has anyone ever tried this?

I read this somewhere too - it was a custom for tibetan dream yogis when they successfully confronted a nightmare eg. monster. Ask it for a present.
Haven't had the chance yet - the last monster's head exploded when I insulted him and generally made him silly
Will remember to do it next time

To me nightmares are a way to show if you have stress or anxiety in your life and they're a way to show it.

I've heard of this, its supposed to be really good if you face your nightmare and just ask it for a gift. Apparently it will give you something, not nessescarily anything particular but something...
