      No smoke?

In my strange dream i had during my nap today (lucid but no control), i lit a cigarette and inhaled, but no smoke came out of my mouth. I tried again, but still no smoke.

Has this ever happened to anyone? Is this strange, or common?

You can read more about it in my dream journal

I don't know about smoking but, in general, physical happenings are very prone to distortion in any imaginable way. So I'd say that your no-smoke situation is normal. Not that cigarettes "normally" have no smoke in dreams. It's just that physics don't apply so the unexpected can very often be the outcome.

Even though it's said that what you expect is what you'll get, it's still a dream.

I'd say this falls somewhat along the lines of the plugged-nose RC, where you plug your nose and see if you can stil breathe.

Still, you'd expect smoke to come out in a non-lucid. If that were the case, it would be one heck of a RC. If you were lucid, then that would probably fall under something you had to manifest into the dream - which would require some control... which you said you had none of.

are you a smoker in real life? if so, how much do you smoke?
I've been smoking for 6 years, the last 2 at least ive been smoking around a pack a day.
Ive never had a dream where I was smoking a cigarette though.
In my next lucid i'll make a point of lighting a smoke, and see what happens.
I think i'll actually be a little dissapointed if no smoke comes out, lol.

      easy...

hey, this brings up an interesting method to quit smoking: smoking only in lucid dreams! Person could hold off the craving until they're in a lucid. It could also become a dreamsign. If one has cut out cigarettes in waking life, they're bound to dream about smoking. As soon as they light up- BAM! Gotta be a dream!

yeah, someone just made a thread on that as a possible LD method actually.
Seems to me it would work. If you quit smoking, you'll dream about it, when you catch your self smoking, do an RC. bam, lucid.

I don't think that would help me quit smoking though. Holding off the cravings until an LD that is. I dont crave cigarettes in dreams, but i for sure do in real life. plus, you're still faced with holding off for 12 hours or more while awake. which for prople who have been smoking for some years like I have, aint an easy task.

quitting, and turning it into a solid dream sign would work damn well i think, though.

That I can understand. But we know for a fact that audible and other senses experienced in the waking body will effect dreams - so if you crave a cigarette badly in a dream, you'll likely incorporate cigarettes in some form in the dream. Just hope it isn't some giant Godzilla-sized Camel with 10-inch fangs or something! Actually, you'd probably dream about some hot chick who then turns into a cigarette as you're having sex. Hmmmm.... that could be a lucid task of the month

I would SO smoke that Godzilla-Camel.

And there's no way i could not smoke until i LD. I don't LD enough, and i crave nicotine way too much -- no nicotine in a dream cig!

My cigarette pack was a dream sign, i pretty much exerted passive control over it. Check out my dream log for the full info

Sure, with that attitude, you can fail at anything. If you ever do want to quit that's the first thing you'll need to change.
