Many people think that experiences in their dreams relate to past lives. Or you can become lucid, say "Show me my past life," and walk through a mirror.
If you believe in reincarnation, then that may actually be your past life. I had a friend describe to me a dream in which she was an indian man and believes it was her past life. She loves India, spent a year there as a student, and always wondered why she had an attraction to it.
Any past event would be your memory of it or an interpertation of your subconscious. Lucid dreaming is all in your mind, there's no higher power or higher plane (like some believe astral projection to be)...that is, unless you believe some spirit is manipulating your dreams or something.
Any future event you see would be the same as above, just not a memory -- some random event your mind makes up. Although people do have precognitive dreams which show the future, if you decide to visit the future it won't really be the FUTURE.
If it was the future, then it would be pointless, as you could change the future anyway through the course of your actions. If you see yourself dying, for example, while climbing a mountain, you can choose not to climb a mountain -- therefore changing your future and rendering any precognition pointless.
