its hard for me to fall asleep right away too, sometimes my mind wanders and i just think about too many things. i try not to think about anything at all, just picture a blank whiteness and concentrate on that for a while.

I took like 6 mg of melatonin last night, just cuz I was sick of laying there awake for hours... and wow did it work!!

The only problem is it ruined my dream recall for that night.

I let my mind wander and then I fall asleep. And I naturally remind myself that I could be asleep at any moment, and just think about dreaming, and whatever's on my mind. Which happens to be dreaming anyways! I used to be an insomniac and good music always put me to sleep.

It didnt ruin your recall, you just dreamt on a different level.

Melatonin works best if you already have good recall, as dreams become

so lifelike, they are very hard to recall.

Especially in the beginning, if you take relatively large dose

Once I decided to try "melatonin extreme" and took like 21 mg melatonin,

500mg B6 and some valeriana on top of that... Dreams were trippy as

      hell.

      WHOA 500mg of B6???

My recall has been really good.. at least 5 dreams a night.. but melatonin didn't really improve anything. I did take a bunch of B6 one night, though, and the next morning I spent like an hour writing down my dreams. Which is good... and bad for my hand.

Do you take B6/melatonin often? I wonder if you can become dependant on them for good dreams, and then remember nothing once you stop taking them.

I have dreams all the time and I can almost always remember them really well.

I go to sleep, close my eyes and start thinking about something I want to dream about, and trying to picture it in my head.

I can usually start dreaming w/in the first 15-20 minutes. I'm weird like that.

you need to try and still your mind and limit what you think about.

if you try and stop thinking completely it sometimes has the opposite affect.

try and concentrate on one thing, like your breathing - that will stop other external thoughts pushing in.

try not to rehash events that have occured at any time, and avoid planning what you might do tomorrow.

if you can make your mind loose, you can often float off with the lovely bizaare thoughts you have before you fall asleep.
This reality is like a goldfish bowl. The dreamworld is the same, but larger. It's easy to get lost.

First off - Is the anxiety about not sleeping or something else?
Long-term I would try to deal with that, perhaps let go of trying to sleep!!! Sleep is often described as 'letting go'...
Do you have a comfortable bed?!
All the normal things will help: get plenty of exercise and fresh air during the day, eat well, wind down by not doing work, or thinking too much last thing (reading a trashy novel could help here).
I used to find it hard going to sleep - my mind was often racing (and still is) but now I do a combination of WILD and progressive relaxation. The WILD doesnt always work but the sleeping does! Basically I repeat "I am dreaming" whilst focussing on relaxing my toes, feet, ankles, calves etc. I normally only get to my belly before I'm off.
      Good Luck!

I took 3 mg of melatonin, and I passed straight out. It also contains 500% B6. 2-in-one

I took it once to try it

Usually I'm taking 6 mg melatonin with some (like 20 mg) b6. This gives me good recall and crazy dreams

I have insomnia, sometimes even when i take melatonin

      Mother

I know this will probably sound really motherly of me...but it works for me...try a warm glass of milk before bed....it's worth a shot.
