      Fear of Never Waking?

Now I haven't personally experienced this, but I've been teaching some small groups about lucid dreaming, and one person came and asked me about being afraid that he was never going to wake up.

i have lucid dreams many many times.
The scariest part of a lucid dream for me, is the fear of knowing im dreaming and not being able to wake up. What is this called?
      Has anyone experienced this?

At first when i realize im dreaming, its all fun but sometimes, ill start to get worried in my dream that im never going to be able to wake up no matter how hard i try. in the dream, i picture scenarios where i wake up but i know im not in reality, and im still in a dream. no matter how hard i try i cant wake up and i start to fear im going to live out my entire life in a dream state.
So, anyone else experienced this or know anything about this kind of fear?

I know a little bit about it. If your looking for this person to overcome this fear it would be right to ask them why he/she is affriad of waking up. Ie, Death, needs to finish a project and cannot waste valuble time sleeping. When you have a concrete answear then you can begin to figure out how to help them cope with that fear or obsession.

I should be floating, but I'm weighted by thinking

I think the end summed his reason up quite nicely

i start to fear im going to live out my entire life in a dream state.

I'm pretty sure its very general, kinda like asking someone "Why they don't want to die." The answer is usually simply some form of "Just because... I don't want to die."

But I will ask and see if theres more to it, but I'm pretty sure its just general fear.

I'm always afraid I'm going to wake up. I hate the waking up part.

I guess they're afraid of being trapped. That you would eventually run out of things to dream about.

I would be afraid of being stuck in a lucid dream if i could never share the experience with anyone. I think eventually I would want real people instead of DCs.

Of course, I've never been in a lucid for more the a few minutes, so what do I know.

Explain to him that his fear is irrational. Most people have a fear of dying, it's a basic instinctual feeling. But, to fear that he is going to never wake up from a lucid dream to the point where he is desperately trying to awake from them and can no longer enjoy them defeats the whole purpose. And even if he was to live out his entire afterlife in a dream as if he is dead or something, tell him its a lot better than going to hell.

Isn't there some weird disease that makes you sleep 23 hours a day and wake up with a weird personality? But that's really rare.

I've had this a few times, and it is scary. Like many lucid skills, all it takes is a little experience--the second or third time it happens, you realize that you are not going to be stuck in a dream forever. Tell them it will pass.

Yes, I fucked up once. I thought I might not wake up after having a load of FA's one after another. I became lucid almost straight away in each one but decided to end them. Duh.

I have had that fear of being stuck in a dream. A different fear I've had was when I somehow knew or felt that I was seconds from falling asleep or dreaming (not sure which) and I shot up with my adrenaline going because I felt like I would die if I fell asleep.

Hrm seems weird, I think I've had this but it was when I was really drowsy. It's obviously not going to happen unless you're in a coma.

I'm not really afraid of this for two reasons. 1 - your REM period is gonna end. Honest to God It might seem like it takes a while, but you just have to remember that you are not gonna lay in bed dreaming forever. REM doesn't last forever, sleep doesn't last forever, it's physically impossible. You are gonna wake up 2 - For me personally, I started having lucids when I was a kid, along with sometimes semi-lucids that would sometimes start to turn into a nightmare - or a nightmare into a lucid. Anyway the point is, if I ever got too scared, all I'd have to do is either shake my head from side to side really hard, or try my hardest to yell (when I was a kid it was "Mom!", but any word would work for me now I think). The intense effort invested in shaking my head or trying to yell would always wake me up... so I think I could wake myself up if I really had to. I dunno if it's like that for anyone else? Does anyone have a foolproof way of waking themselves up if they no longer want to be in a dream?
