      Songwriting

Im a musician. So one of the things im gonna use lucid dreaming for is songwriting. i've heard its can be used to reach peaks of your own creativity. could anyone kinda clarify / explain this?

also, i have a good knowledge of music and musical instruments. do you think i could learn a song in a dream that i have no experience of learning in waking life?

      cheers

They say you reach the peak of your creativity in dreams because many brain centres are awake when in the REM phase, yet the brain isn't processing nearly any data from the senses, freeing up extra processing power. Also because dreams are often seemingly random, they can be inspiring in themselves. I think your main problem will be remembering the songs you think of in dreams ad verbatim, since we tend to forget dreams quickly. I'd suggest memorizing them using mnemonics, but I've never tried doing that in dreams, so I have no idea how that would turn out.

As for learning songs in dreams... you probably mean learning how to play a song in your dreams. Theoretically it's possible... if you know the song by heart and if your dreams are realistic and stable enough to properly simulate you playing an instrument. It may be harder for some instruments than others, but having prior experience with the type of instrument is most likely a must.

Anyways I wish you good luck with your efforts!

I'm a musician too and, as you will see from my signature, one of my goals is to compose a song from something that I hear during a dream. I haven't been successful yet, but the theory is fairly simple.

When dreaming, all the restrictions that bind one's mind during waking hours disappear. A person becomes incredibly imaginative and creative, and a song created during a dream would have a quality to it that is very hard to obtain through the normal means.

What I try to do is become lucid, then turn on a radio, or go to a concert, or just concentrate until I can hear a melody of some kind. Then, so that I won't forget it, I sort of imagine what the music would look like if it were a physical thing, for example, seeing the changes in pitch as though they are on a graph. What I've come up with so far hasn't been anything worth composing, but I think that I'm making progress.

I would be very interested to know how your attempts go.

Agreed, don't actively try to write a new song, expect a new one to play on a radio or tape, then memorize it.

I had a really odd dream once where I could change the past by writing "history" in a certain book. I don't remember what I did but somehow I was transfered back in time and wrote an entire symphony. I read this in the future and sudenly the music started playing and it was AMAZING. It was one of those awh-striking experiences. The thing is, though I am a musician in real life, I couldn't write a decent song if my life depended on it. But here in the dream I supposedly wrote this entire symphony. (And the thing is, I have never ever heard anything like it in real life.)

I don't know if my story can help you at all, (probably not) but maybe it can at least cause some inspiration. ^^ I think you can create amazing things in the dream state you couldn't come up with in real life, the trick is making it happen.
