      Uberman (Polyphasic) Sleep cycles.

I have always wanted to have a polyphasic sleep cycle, yet its near impossible to work it into my schedule. Does anyone do this, or does anyone know anybody who's been successful?

I've looked at practically every website on this subject, so if someone could find me an old thread or something relevant that I may not have seen it would be greatly appreciated. Maybe even some scientific journal material.

      thanx.

Interesting concept! Thank you, I didn't know anything about it.

I bet when you get reaaly good at it that WILD would be a snap!

That said, there is little I can add except that I don't think there is really any way I could adjust my schedule to the point I could practice this.

      Good Luck!

its where you sleep only 2 hours a day by taking a 30 minute nap every four hours (or something like that).

      Famous polyphasic sleepers:
      Da Vinci
      Pythagoras
      Thomas Edison
      Einstein
Kurt Cobain (controversial, he may simply have been a narcoleptic or coming down from heroin a lot)

it takes two weeks to work into the schedule. By what I understand, from the 3rd day to the 8th, you are practically a zombie. but the very small amount of people who are successful in doing this report better moods, stronger mental acuity, more vivid dreams, and more energy... as well as more time in the day.

oh yeah, ninjas used to do this.

I tried this out, but alas i'm now sick with a fever so i stopped, i got up to 3 days. i'll try again when this semester is over..

oh yeah this also reminds me of a babies sleep schedule, this is how they sleep naturally, by taking naps, by forcing them to sleep at night you're changing the natural sleeping pattern. sorry i don't have any links atm to back this up but i read this somewhere about babies having polyphasic sleeping schedules until you start enforcing the schedule everyone is used to.

Sounds like a post for a lab experiment. If you want to organize it I'd be interested in trying it out eventually.... Maybe not during school, but at breaks it would be interesting to see how it works.

good point crispexi. when my baby is born, i should try this. maybe it will help me not be so tired until the baby works out his sleep schedule and starts sleeping through the night on his own.

yeah.. i've been wanting to try this for a while.. supposedly while you're adjusting you're basically training your body to skip phases 1-4 of sleep, and jump directly to REM, so basically every 4 hours you take a "hit" of REM to keep you going.. I've heard it gives you intensely vivid dreams.

there was a scientist (name escapes me) who did studies on this (as well as the military) when the subjects slept for 15 minutes every 4 hours they maintained current levels of mental performance (they wrote IQ tests, etc) when they slept for 30 minutes their performance gradually increased. however it was found that 24 minute naps every 4 hours, and a long (normal) sleep cycle once per week, produced the best results, with many subjects showing dramatic increases

there's a couple ways to adjust to the schedule. you can, gradually sleep less at night, and take more and more naps. or you can go "cold turkey" and jsut switch. if you slowly adjust by cutting time spent sleeping at night, and add more naps it is easier to manage, and is not as hard physically. Also this avoids the 'zombie period" of going cold turkey.

but yeah, i wanna try this as soon as i go back to school and actually have time.

like i said, i will have to try this once the baby comes. rather, he will more than likely force me to sleep like this at first. but since i won't be working it will be easier and i can nap when the baby does.
