Tape Recorder: Replacement for Dream Journal?

Is there any evidence that the writing down aspect of tracking your dreams is important? I hate having to get up and write down so much in the morning that I can't even force myself to do it anymore, so I'm thinking of recording my dreams by voice, or even by a voice recording application I bought for my iPod touch. It'll probably be better for remembering more anyway.

      What do you think?

Recording would be the same. Just the fact that you have to keep the dream in your memory for a time helps you RC, I believe?

Yeah, I think it'd be the same. It actually stays in my memory better this way.

Verbalising something aloud, is actual more consciously effective for memorising something.

      All the better!

      That's great!

Now my only problem is that this iTalk Recorder I just bought for my iPod touch won't work! Arrrgh!

I have used a voice recorder from the very start of my dream journaling, and couldn't imagine doing it any other way.

My dream jorunal can be found here (a bit out of date; working on it)

      http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...ad.php?t=55258

People have commented that my dream journal is fairly detailed, which I attribute to my method. When I wake up, I immediately grab my recorder, and talk out my dream, recalling everything I can: conversations, colors, emotions, etc. Then, when I have time, I go back and listen to the dream and transcribe it into words. A bit time consuming, but I think it has helped my dream recall, and is very relaxing.

I tend to record my lucids, because when I hear myself talking about them, I understand better what was going on. Sometimes when I write dreams down, it's difficult to remember what actually happened when I read them back.

I've got an iTouch as well, Deerythedeer - what's the problem? What's it doing (or not doing)??

      Great avatar, BlueFly!

I've been using a recorder for quite some time now and it's way better than writing it down. When I first wake up I lie still for a while and recall as much of my dream as I can. Then when I can't think of any more I record it verbally. Then later in the day I write it into my journal. Sometimes I will remember more info during the course of the day.

I really look forward to writing in my dream journal. It's such a nice, peaceful activity.

The most important thing is to recall your dream as soon as you wake up. How you choose to record it is less important. But I do find it so much easier and quicker with a voice recorder.

The program comes up just fine, but when I push the record button, it's recording but it won't pick up any sound no matter what I try, and all the files I save are just nothing but a faint buzzing sound. Am I supposed to have a microphone or what?

Yeah, I use my Sony Walkman mp3 player which has a voice recorder in it (I hate iPods). I wake up in the morning, and record it all down. Then I get up, have some breaky, and jump on the computer where I upload the file from my mp3 player to my DJ folder. Then I type it all up while I listen to it, adding more detail as I write.

The thought of waking up in the morning and having to write a page seems horrid.

Its funny to listen back on them though, because my voice is all tired and groggy with many yawns, which of course is because I litterally had just woken up.

The advantage of writing them down, is that it is alot easier to skim through them to find your dream signs. Its hard to listen to lengthy voice extracts at a time, especially when you just want to find specific things. Writing them down is good for catalouging them.

I get the best of both worlds, because I do both.

If you're new to dream journaling, I'd suggest not only voice recording, but then write then down later. Writing them down is important as you can highlight the different dreamsign categories, thus familiarizing yourself with your own personal dreamsigns.

Oh, yeah, you are. It's designed for the iPhone and won't work on first generation iTouches, but if you have a 2nd gen you can buy a microphone from Apple. (Or possibly try plugging any old mic into the headphones socket; you never know...)

Well, I actually have a really old, bulky 90s tape recorder with a big microphone that still works with an empty tape (I tried the big microphone on my iTouch and not surprisingly, it didn't work). I might just have to save money and go old school. It's kind of fun anyway. Then I'll play the tape back and type everything down later.

You can pick up a digital voice recorder at Best Buy for around 50 bucks, possibly cheaper now. The unit I have has a built-in USB port. Plugs right into the computer, uploads the file. Then I just pop on a pair of headphones, pull up my dream journal and transcribe.

I love those digital voice recorders that work right in the shop. They had some of them in K-Mart and I recorded onto all of them: "Don't buy this at K-Mart, buy it at Target, it's cheaper".
