I do it all the time. I'd say it's bad if the person is abusing sleep/dreaming, just as someone could abuse any sort of drug or behavior. I mean 'abuse' is up to an individual to define or judge. But if someone is putting off real life, or responsibilities, and going to sleep (especially be 'be with' dream characters instead of real people, to have some sort of freedom, or some sort of power that is either unattainable or requires not sleeping all the time to achieve) I'd personally say that's probably not a good thing. If you're getting in trouble because of your sleeping, I guess. Just like anything else though, in moderation it can be very very positive and therapeutic.

First of all Lucid dreaming alone cannot be used as a way to escape from reality. This is because of complications that arise during the lucid dream. To escape you need waking memory inside the dream so that you can 'escape' being aware of what you would want to do in the dream and not just randomely escape like normal dreaming. From my 3 years of lucid dreaming experience....lucid dreams do not include waking memory unless it's very near to waking up and when that happens it's too short to escape anywhere. So if you want to use lucid dreaming or dreaming in general to escape....you will have to incorporate reality with dreaming as a single lifestyle.

I definitely use lucid dreaming as a form of escapism, but mostly only when I'm lacking something in the waking world. For example, I am a very shy person, and don't have many friends in real life, so I use lucid dreaming as a way to feel like I have a life sometimes. I don't think this is a good use of LDing, but it's mainly what I use LDing for.
