How long does rem rebound last?

Long story short: I had no REM last night, will REM rebound effect my sleep tonight?

How in the world could you possibly know that you had no REM, unless you didn't sleep?

I have read that if you deprive yourself of REM sleep for long enough, it will happen while you are awake. I have also read that researchers deprive rodents of REM sleep through the flowerpot technique and not read any of their concerns with this happening to their rats. So, I don't know.

Well, I took melatonin, woke up at 4am (4 hours later), and a family disaster (uncle went to the ambulence) kept me up until a point where I just couldn't go back to sleep. Now, I'm going to go to sleep at 7:30pm

What I mean is, will the rebound last over for a day and make my dream longer tonight, or can it just be done in one night?

I think it should last for a while, but honestly don't quote me, I really haven't read very much about REM rebound. I'll have to look into it to be able to give you any answers, but I won't be able to do that until Tuesday afternoon. If no one has given you an answer by then, hopefully I'll be able to.

Thanks, I'm not going to take melatonin tonight. What does REM rebound REALLY do to dreams, though? Just wondering, since I never consciously experienced it.

The oversimplification is that you owe 1/2 the time you missed sleeping to catch up.

Eg: You missed 6 hours of sleep out of your normal 8.

You need to make up 3 extra hours to get back into your normal cycle. Sleep 11 hours the next day and you should be fine.

Disclaimer: The scientists are battling one another if this is actually true.

Missed a few nights of sleeps because of messed up sleeping schedule, caffeine and going out. Slept around 2-3 each nights. Anyway, I was at the university, trying to keep myself awake to take notes and i would start to hallucinate/dream. For example, I would see my my writing shifting around, I was sure I could see my notebook levitating a few inches from the table, as did my pen. It was pretty nice, except I don't try to do this on purpose, too tiring.

Happened to me a couple of time tho.

Just know that with sleep, you will rebound on the deepest levels of sleep first. So it'll be more likely that your delta sleep would be compensated before any type of REM Rebound happened.

But after enough nights in a row of not catching your REM cycle, REM rebound would become a hell of a lot more likely.
