Scary experience while trying to LD

I haven't tried to LD in over 10 years when I was around 16. I found it really interesting and I was able to LD quite easily. I had only been trying to LD for a few weeks and had a bad experience.

Anyway, the reason I quit LDing is because I was starting to go into it and all of the sudden I see this guy I know that had hurt me IRL. In this "dream" he is really scary looking skinny like a concentration camp victim. He is wearing a red bandana on his head. He puts his arms out at me like he is trying to grab me and contorts his face and mouth in this really scary way and growls at me. I then saw myself like an OBE. It was like I was looking down on myself sleeping. I watched myself jump as this image of this guy did this in my head. It was SO scary I quit LDing and meditating after this.

Part of me wants to LD again but, I have always been freaked out by this experience. I still dream all the time and I'm aware I am dreaming, but I haven't intentionally tried to LD.

This was different, it was like I was trying to get into a LD and it happened. I had never fell asleep, or I just had fell asleep. I was fully aware of what was going on though. It was strange to see myself and to experience that at the same time. I thought I had opened myself up in a way I wasn't prepared for at the time.

Is this common? I am thinking about trying LD again.

This sounds sort of like sleep paralysis. Occupational hazard. I wouldn't worry too much about it
