Angry So close to first LD! Stupid false awakening...

I was dreaming that I was running or jumping or riding a bike or something really fast in the forest. Suddenly, I lost control and got launched into the air. My arms are flailing around and I'm level with the top of the trees (big trees). I crash down into the ground right beside a log. I look up and George Washington is sitting on the log. He gives a wow-your-an-idiot smile. Then I think. wait? George Washington? I do the nose RC and I can breath. I feel the dream sliping away, so I rub my hands together, but then I'm in my bed rubbing my hands together. I didn't realize that in real life, I wouldn't wake up rubbing my hands together.

George was right, I am an idiot lol

How can I prevent false awakenings and how can i tell when I'm in my dream?

While the rubbing your hands technique usually works, I've heard that spinning is more effective. I haven't tried either though, because I just had my first LD last night (and I, like you, woke up immediately)
So next time you feel the dream slipping away, try spinning! This can also take you to a new location (in your dream land)

Last night when I had an LD, I tried spinning really fast, and eventually I ended up waking out of bed. I didn't trust it though, so I counted my fingers on one hand and I had about 7. I remained lucid.

The moral of this story is, NEVER take "waking up in bed" at face value. Always suspect a false awakening and do a reality check once you've "woken up".

Ya I think thats the con of spinning. But I think that it will mostly end in a false awakening. I do a RC before even sitting up in bed haha

I was going to, but I have lying down, having crashed into the ground, so I couldn't.
