      First Ever False Awakening, trippy

OK so for the last few nights i've been kind of sleep deprived (studying, partying, jerks calling in bomb threats at 2 am, etc) so last night i decided that i would get to bed early and sort of catch up on all that sweet sweet sleep i had been missing out on. I went to bed around 10 planning to wake up the next afternoon (if all went well) so i tucked myself in and floated off to dream land. Now somewhere during this I woke up. I tried to check the time on my clock but saw the face was kind of fuzzy (not a real dream sign because without my glasses i couldn't see it anyway). So then i start to get the feeling, "hey maybe i'm dreaming" but then dismissed it after a few seconds. then i just kind of sat still for a while but the thought never left "what if i'm dreaming". so i decided to shut my mind up and try a reality check. I held out the palm of my hand and tried to put my finger through it. Much to my horror, my finger did indeed go through. The shock woke me up for real this time (trust me i checked haha)

So this was my first experience with a false awakening, and i have to say that it was trippy to say the least. Still no LD's yet, but this experience kind of reinspired me to perform better and more regular reality checks.

I've had a couple false awakenings that really pissed me off, because both happened after I was aware I was passing into REM sleep (like WILDing) and knew the dream stage was about to begin. The FAs were very realistic though. Right after the FAs, I woke up for real and never got to my LDs.

Funny you should mention the finger through the palm, as that is what I came here to write about in the first place.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here, but your reality check failed, so you knew you were dreaming, so it WAS therefore an LD?

Yeah that sounds like an LD to me. Much like my first one I had the other day, I got excited and had a FA.

Well, he actually said nothing about realising he was dreaming.

He said he was so shocked that he woke up. In other words, he was so weirded out that such a thing could happen in real life, and never gave it a thought that it could have infact been a dream. Which is completely understandable since there is no logic in dreams.

Well Wrexx, next time you just have to stay awake (easier said than done sometimes) and then you can have some brilliant lucid! This was close though, and it's good that you RC whenever you wake up. It's a good habit to form. And did you realize you were dreaming? Because if you did, this is your first LD (even though it was super short) in which case: CONGRATS!
      ...And then to dream...

ah so apparently i have had a lucid dream (lasted a whole 2 milliseconds) I was just so freaked by the whole finger through the hand thing, maybe i'll try a different kind of reality check that doesn't involve impaling an extremity. I've also noticed that the best success as far as dream vividness goes happens when i'm sleep deprived and go to sleep not even thinking of lucid dreaming

guess i'll just count this as half a lucid dream...Huzzah!

LOL -- that's actually one of the reasons why I haven't been using that particular RC -- I figure that if I ever did it in a dream and my finger went through my hand, I would totally freak out.

Yeah, I've used that RC before, but I can understand why your reaction to it woke you up. I think a good reality check would be to look at a clock, remember the time it said, and then look back a sec later. If the time has change drastically, you know something's up!
