free online book: Sleep, dreams and spiritual reflections

I am new to the group. I will like to share a a nice online book ( englsih translation) with the group with title
      sleep, dreams and spiritual reflections"

It can be downloaded from http://www.awgp.org/english/books/sleep_dreams.pdf
Author - Pt. Shriram Sharma Acharya

Here is the preface and TOC for the book:

      PREFACE
Dreams have always been the focus of curiosity, interest, and quest of the human mind. These have led to varieties of false convictions and mystic notions on the one hand, and have accelerated research in Psychology, Neurology and Parapsychology on the other. The reality, origin, reflections and implications of dreams are discussed in great detail in this book, which is compiled from the translation of the Chapters 4 and 5 of the volume 18 of “Pt. Shriram Sharma Acharya Vangmaya” series.A detailed description of the history and trends in the oriental and occidental philosophy and science of dreams is
presented here. The myths and facts about acquisition of extra sensory knowledge, precognition, and psychological depths of the unconscious mind and the unknown subtle world of the inner self through dreams are elucidated here. Thorough reviews of Freud’s, Jung’s and contemporary psychological theories vis-ΰ-vis the relevant aspects of the ancient science of spirituality are discussed under broad perspectives.
The current status and future scope of research on dreams is discussed with substantial references. Special attention is focused on dream based early detection, diagnosis and therapies in the context of reported scientific experiments.
The readers will also get to know how the decipheration of dreams could help resolving the complexities of
psychosomatic disorders and elevating one’s psychology. Sleep is an integral part of life. The variegated experiences of dreams also become possible in this phase. In normal case, for most of us sleep is almost an automatic, mechanical, or routine process. We do realize its importance in
relaxing and recharging of the body and the mind but hardly pay any attention to its significant role in harmonizing the brain functions, mental stability and self-development. The present book unfolds the multiple facets of this natural and crucial process of daily-life.
Interrelationship of sleep, dreams and the limitless potentials of the conscious, subconscious, and the unconscious mind are lucidly focused here in great depth. The causes, pernicious effects, and remedies of insomnia, somnabulism, and other disorders of sleep are discussed with substantial examples. Live examples of mysterious cases of sleepless healthy and normal life for several decades and those of decades long natural sleep are also reported with details on the ancient and modern research findings on such wonders of human brain. The trenchancy of mind and its improved learning capabilities during deep sleep is given special mention here and the results of recent experiments, research trends, and scope of the techniques like hypnopaedia is discussed together with the specific "yog sadhnas"of relevance.
It is said that the ‘time-capsule’ existing in the inner cores of unconscious mind contains the key to realization of
supernormal faculties like –– clairvoyance, telepathy, premonition, intuition, audio-visual perceptions beyond the
constraints of time and space, complete knowledge of the past and future and of the esoteric features of nature.... The false convictions, illusions and the truth of the transcendental realities of dreams and the subliminal world of the unconscious mind are brought out trenchantly by the author with discussions on a wide varieties of live examples of dreams collected from authentic reports and research documents. The list of examples includes the dreams that led to great scientific discoveries or masterpiece creations of literature, art and music in the modern age, as well as the significant dreams of the architects of world history….
The book presents the invaluable pearls of ancient knowledge in terms of – elucidation of the five levels of dream vis-ΰ-vis the five subtle sheaths of consciousness and the deeper aspects of creative conjugation of mind with the inner impulses of the soul. It is up to us how best we make use of this rare guidance on spiritual evolution and opportunity of epoch-making research bestowed on us….
It is hoped that the book would be interesting and informative to all those who would read it out of sheer inquisitiveness about dreams. It would, at the same time, motivate and effectively guide the researchers of the hidden domains of human mind.

Finally, I finish reading this book. It is actualy good, but it's a kind of general presentation, even from the point of view of the Science of spirituality.
      this is beyond experience

Oh, this is a fascinating compilation. It is typical of good Indian Scholarship, where the author will seem to read every book in several languages, from modern works back to scrolls and parchments, and present everything that may even border upon being interesting. Where Western Intellectuals would shun reusing what they think to be information that they suppose already sufficiently hashed over, the Indian Scholars rightly suppose that all information may be new to somebody.... like telling old jokes to very young children -- even an old joke is funny when one hears it for the first time.

So, yes, that On Line Book is extremely rich in information. Also, it is reflective of the Old School of Dreaming. Dreams are considered very important. Dream Work is amply discussed. But from cover to cover you will not see the term 'Lucid Dreaming' used not even one single time. One discovers that Lucid Dreaming is just a current fad in a broad tradition of Dream Cultivation.

I suppose the author is setting himself up to be some All Wise Guru, which may be a very long stretch, but he is in fact a very competent scholar. In this instance he has successfully compiled all of the old studies, books and repeated legends and stories about Dreams. But I emphasize 'old' here. What? They have nothing published in the last 30 years in India? There is not a single chapter... no, wait, not a single sentence or paragraph regarding Lucid Dreaming.

Is the author now too old to get back to work?

Leo, you are corret, the author who was a spiritual master passed away in 1990. and the book was writen in Hindi probably in 1980's. His formal education was only 5th grade however he wrote so much literatre and gave refences to so many events and quoted researcheres from all over the world ( see the book-- the extra sensory potentials of mind --- and Asonising poweres of brain and miracles of mind)

      http://www.awgp.org/english/books/extra_potentials.pdf
      http://www.awgp.org/english/books/astonish...human_brain.pdf

that I always wondered on how he could get such infomration in a remote area of Inida with no libraries. ( I met the author as child due to my father's association with him). He has written an mazing number of books and only a very small fraction of he books have been translated in English. And he did not keep any copyright for his books.

Hope you enjoy the two books in this post..

I read a bit of it, then realised it was 115 pages long.

Though i skipped to a bit about a woman from france who hadn't slept for 71years. she was called Armanda Jacques, I did some reasearch after this on the internet and didn't find anything. I was wondering where the author of the book got the source from ?

Otherwise it is an interesting article
love lucidty like loving flowers, smells and life

I do not know how he got the information. I know that libraries in Inida could not have such infomration and the autor was staying in a remore region anyway. Also, he has writen so much on so many subjects ( and hand written) that it is a puzzle on how he was able to do so. For many, he was a spiritually enlightend person with knowldge of past present and future..
About the ref. that you asked, I have no idea. One possiblity is that he wrote everytihng in hindi and during translation the names may have missplled. ( I am scietist by training and in some of his other books, I was able to trace downb the work of some of hte scientist that he has reffered to..)

      Hope this is usefull.

      Vipul..
