Thread: Talking in your sleep

Hi guys just thought I would throw this one up in the air and get an input from a few of you, i just got back from camping from Falls Festival, in Victoria. Anyway one morning I got up and my friend said I was talking in my sleep, but he said it wasn't normal mumbling, it was almost like I was on a telephone talking to someone and we were having an actual conversation.

I can't remember anything of it, but what are your opinons, the most obvious one to me straight away is that I was just talking to a dream character whilst having the dream, but I thought that would be just mumbling and a one off line of text but my friend was saying I was saying things, then waiting for a response like I was talking to someone then started talking again just like a normal conversation. He made a few verbal coments to try to wake me up but he said it didn't work. One really weird word he told me I said was "Poppy" as in the Father figure but I have never really used the word, I just use the word Dad.

I've read that sleep talking mainly occurs in non-REM periods, and I also know that non-vivid dreams can occur sometimes in the non-REM periods.

Yeah, I'm a sleep talker and puncher, and sit up, point at a person then screemer. God I wish I knew what I was dreaming that night.

My brother sleep talks all the time, one time he kept telling me "Its behind the TV.". One time I was in my dad's room going to get my MP3 Player and he was like "You like that bitch?" and flipped, um, the wall off.

Nobodies told me I talk in my sleep, but I've been known to sleep walk.

Ah dude, my sisters sleep walk, I wish I did, then again, it could be dangerous I guess.

Once a friend called me around 1:00 and told me to look out my window. I did, and asked what I was supposed to be looking for, when a friend of mine named Andy rode his bike past. I asked why he was doing that, and the friend who called said that he'd been having a sleep over and Andy started sleepwalk around. Eventually he walked down the street and got his bike and started riding back and forth up and down the street, and he claims he doesn't remember any of it...'Course, it's a little hard to swallow, even though I know he's a long-time sleepwalker. Still kind of weird...

Anyway, I talk in my sleep a lot. Aparently I had a conversation with some other kid during my sleep at a camp a month or so ago, and we were both asleep. From what the others who were there said, the conversation made little if any sense, but we'd talk and then wait for responses as well, and at one point he even identified me by name. Yet again though, I can't account for the veracity, since the kids we were with aren't necissarily trustworthy...But then again, it's much more believable than riding a bike while asleep.

Still, there's lots of accounts of wierd occurances during sleep stages. Like sleep eating...

Apparently I used to sleep walk (and talk), but I never remembered any of it, and, according to my parents, I no longer do it.

I'm not sure if I do it or if I'm just too tired to remember being awake. I know I move a lot during sleep, if it goes 3 days without making my bed my bed sheet is down at my feet and half of my cover is out. I've talked and moved around some and even answered the telephone 2-3 times where I lie that I'm awake and that I'm up or on my way before going back to bed. I once told someone to wake me up for a tv program that was gonna start in about an hour and the next morning I was a bit angry because they hadn't done so, but the person was surprised of my reaction because I had told them when they came to wake me up that I would skip it and continue to sleep instead.

Since I don't live with anyone I don't know if I talk or not normally during my sleep these days.

Guys to be quite honest there wasn't much input on my situation at all, you kind of all just told me your stories, that is really the problem with this board there is too much pointless conversations going on, keep the topics neet and tidy.

well, from my knowledge.. there are two types of sleepwalking (and talking i suppose).

1. Sleepwalking while in NREM which is most common, and also more commonly found in little kids. You usually never remember these and usually never wake up from one unless someone wakes you. They tend to make little or no sense and usually you stop having these by the age of 10. My parents told me I had these when I was little, and a few times I would wake up in odd places..

2. Sleepwalking in REM is less common, because most people undergo sleep paralysis during this stage, yet some people do not. I had this happen a few times to myself. Basically, instead of just having the dream all in your mind.. you begin to act it out. Even stranger, there may be times when you are aware of this form of sleepwalking.. I suppose awareness can differ, and you may not remember the dream, however if you are in an LD while sleepwalking, you may remember, even take control of what you are doing while staying in the dream. (I recall a time where I went to the bathroom, and was flying in a dream at the same time... that was weird)

I talk in ym sleep sometimes, but I NEVER remember those dreams!

I remember a lot of dreams, but never ones that im talking in...?

does this happen to anyone else? dont you think its kinda weird? Dont you think taht dreams that make you talk would be more memorable than non-talking dreams?

Wasn't sure of what sort of input you wanted, so I mentioned something that has happened to me where I interacted with my surroundings yet wasn't fully awake or maybe sleeping. The thing you speak of sounds like normal sleep talking where you act out your dream. Sometimes it's more clear plus it differs between people too on how they usually speak while asleep. It's probably a bit rare to always talk coherently while in your sleep, hard to say if it's normal for you or not without anyone willing to study you while you are sleeping for some period of time.

As for what stages it's more likely to happen in I don't know really. The stages kinda differ a bit between people and you can't just say if you talked 80 minutes into sleep it was stage xx.

As for the above poster, I think the normal thing is to not remember the dreams where you talk in. You are probably very deep asleep at the time, if you were sleeping just lightly it should wake you up. You will probably need someone to wake you up and ask you what you were dreaming about to remember anything at all.

Actually, it's the opposite. You don't remember it 'cuz you were in light sleep. Er...lighter. Level 4 is pretty deep, but the reason you don't remember is it isn't REM. REM is the deeper sleep state of the two.

Anyway, I know we didn't give much input, but before you get too anxious for answers, try using the search option to find old sleepwalking subjects. You can find answers much easier. After all, Senseless Banter or otherwise meaningless posts are the lifeblood of these forums!
