I agree with Taromon, if you think too much about it, you’ll ruin any chances you might have.
Now that I know what a lucid dream is

I can share what started my lucid dreams. When I was younger, I had horrible nightmares. When I was about 14 I had had enough. I started thinking “they’re not real” or “they’re just dreams” over and over again in my mind whenever I had free time (IE when I didn’t have to think, like in class lol) If I tried it just at night, I’d be awake half the night.
In my experience, dreams take things from all day and previous days, not just a few minutes before sleep, so if you do your mantra throughout the day instead of just right before bed, maybe it’ll help. However, don’t force yourself to think it; just let it flow through your mind until it becomes "stuck" like a broken record.
I know that after I started doing my “mantra” I stopped having “nightmares” and most of my dreams were lucid (with me in control most of the time) even after I stopped chanting mentally.
Good luck
