Lucid Dreaming, something to be scared of?

I only recently read up on this further on this concept and I'm currently preparing my mind for it, I'm just wondering. Is realizing that you're in a dream scary? If I suddenly realize I have no hair or teeth, that's a good cue, but a scary one at that. Could that turn your lucid dream into a nightmare? I never have nightmares, but whenever I try 'expending my mind' for something for the first time, it always ends up badly.

I'm afraid that once I realize that I'm lucid, I'll be too scared to explore my dream in fear of death or pain. In my dreams, I've always went along for the ride but being aware of what's going on might be scary. What are your experiences, what would you suggest?

I've only lucid dreamed for real once. I got so excited, I woke up after a few seconds of doing things. There's really nothing to be afraid of. You're in control if you're doing it right.

You just have to be aware that your inside YOUR dream and if you see anything scary you can just make it disappear. Your in your own mind so you can control it as you wish. Welcome to dreamviews! Good luck on your lucid dreaming!!

No, I have never heard of someone being scared while becoming lucid- it's more of a great feeling, like you suddenly have the ability to control your dream and most people try flying once they are lucid- and trust me, it is the most amazing feeling ever... let go of your fears and you won't regret it :]

Let me ask you a question...
Would you be afraid of being aware in your waking life?

And why being afraid in dreams? If things turn bad, you can always wake up.

It's not unheard of to have lucid nightmares (almost always people who have never heard or thought of dream control), but the act of becoming aware being a scary experience... is unheard of.

Don't be afraid of change, that'll get you nowhere. You have to realize that the moment you become lucid in a dream is amazing, because that's the moment you realize that you can do anything you can imagine. Sex? Check. Flying? Check. Punching fear in the face? Check. Don't worry about it just because it's new, a new great experience is still a great experience, and nothing is going to change that.

First of all, welcome to the forum.
No, lucid dreaming is not scary. There is the occasional zombie apocalypse in lucid dreams, but it's more fun than terror. They are really enjoyable. Don't be afraid, and good luck!

I was afraid of Lucid dreaming when I first heard of it. In one aspect I was excited to learn and thought it would be amazing! In another i was worried i would somehow not be able to wake myself up, or experience something scarey.

Then after about only 1 week of reality checking I became Lucid in a dream!
I was walking through a hallway into a house and suddenly I looked at my hand saw an 'L' on it and realised I was Lucid! Then the hallways went dark and scarey, I was so overwhelmed by the fact i was Lucid, I didn't know what to do. I let myself get over excited and created something scarey. Then I woke up. I was gutted
See? If anything scarey happends, it is YOU doing it. And you can wake yourself up in a second!
      Nothing at all to fear
Just remember, don't panic, keep optimistic and remember, in a lucid dream you are in control! So even if something scarey does happen... you can change it

I'm not talking with very much Lucid dreaming experience here, but from the few Lucid experiences I have had, Its definitely not scarey unless you make it that way.
      Good luck!

After creating this thread, I headed to bed and had my first lucid dream(if you can call it that as it felt like it only laster 10 seconds). I was looking at my room through my bed, grabbed my cell phone and opened it to look at the display(my reality check). Their was no phone background and the text was smudged so I knew it had to be a dream. Immediately my world turned grey and I felt like my consciousness lifted up from my body and I woke up. It was a little exiting, and not scary at all.

I'm still a little frightened by the idea of something happening while fully lucid, but I'll just have to remember that it's my dream and my rules. Thanks for the replies people, and I'm glad to be here on the forum.

Congratulation for your first lucid dream!
First lucid dream are usually very short. Cause of the excitement.

Why would it be scary ? You can control everything, with practice.

And congratulations on your first. It's normal that it lasts only a couple of seconds, it'll get better and long with time, the first step is the biggest.

I was having the worst of sleep paralysis and I even hate to sleep @ night and day due to this. But this one happened recently. I was having a day time nap alone in my bed. After a while I felt as somebody is climbing upon my bed and lying near to me. The sensations in my body told me that I am having another terrifying experience. Within seconds this beast got hold of me from back side, trying to kill me. Suddenly an insight dragged me to thinking in the opposite direction. I wished to treat this beast as my bed mate and behaved in the same way…of course we (I) had a great time in that lucid dream just followed. All my worries and fears of sleep paralysis were washed away from that point onwards. Now I am trying everyday to have that experience. All my perceptions are changed. The lesson learned by me is “the more you fear this, the more it will haunt you…so reverse your emotions”
