      getting started

i've read a ton about lucid dreaming and i'd like to try it, but i don't quite know where to start, any pointers? also, i have a question about lucid dreaming, is it possible to seek out a person that i have never met while awake when i am lucid dreaming? i had a dream about a girl once, and i would really like to find her again in a dream.

Start with dream recall. Use a dream journal. Start with WILD method. You may find the tutorial in this site.

I would work on dream recall until you can easily remember multiple dreams a night. When I say dreams, I mean more than fleeting disconnected images/situations, but real sequences of events - on a very regular basis. This will make Lucid Dreaming induction considerably easier. Besides, if for some reason you were able to wake up within a dream before this point, it would be pointless because you wouldn't even remember it happening or what you did after you began lucid dreaming. Some people recall dreams like this naturally, for me I had to work on it. I don't know your current dream recall abilities, but a technique that seriously sped up the process for me was to use keywords. After you are at least writing down something in the dream journal every morning, begin to right key words rather than all you can remember and come back to the dream journal later that day. Look at your key words and the try and fill in the details with a normal thorough dream journal entry. It really seems to give the dream recall muscles a good workout.

I don't recommend going for the WILD this early on, it's a more advanced technique. You should keep a dream journal until you can remember at least 1-2 dreams every night.

Once you have dream recall down, read through your dreams to see if you have anything that shows up a lot. For instance if someone you know is in a lot of your dreams, right that down. Get 5-10 things that occur in a lot of your dreams. Then, do Reality Checks whenever you see these things in waking life. Once it becomes a habit of doing Reality Checks in waking life, it should happen during your dreams, and then you will realize that you're dreaming.

I disagree with WILD. I think beginners should start with DILD.

Thx for correcting me. I am not afraid of posting incorrect opinions while people like you are around. But I should mention that WILD was a success for me.

It varies from people to people. The main idea of a DJ is to keep track of your dreams and find out the THEME of your dreams. It may be a person, a place, an event etc. Once you got this you might have a perfect dreamsign which may help to recognize your dreams. Of course this method follows the DILD method.

ive been able to remember 1-2 dreams every day for a long time, but only just now started a dream journal. also, one of my dream signs seems to be me doing a specific activity, so how do i go about doing reality checks for that? or using it to do a DILD?

You should reality check every time you do this specific activity, even if you think you're awake. Unobtrusive reality checks include a quick count of your fingers, and willing the time to change on a digital watch.

I pick up a half-eaten copy of a book by Neil Gaiman, and decide this is all his fault.
