      First of all, I'll note that I had to combine your double-post. Please don't do it again. You can just edit the first one if you want to add something. Second of all, I think that nightmares are brought on by expecting something bad to happen. Sometimes it happens by fluke of your subconscious interpreting something and winding up in a scary situation for you. But then you start to expect more fright and it snowballs. That's just a theory, though.
