Hi there Baneofwar!! Welcome to DV!
That is indeed the first and most important step. Journal as much as you can, feelings or loose thoughts from scattered dreams are important to write down.

Take a look over the guides and the DVA. They are of great help!

I had a weird thing happen to me today. I was in a middle ground between sleep and awake. I was very much conscious but I was still dreaming. I didn't have any control. This didn't last very long at all maybe 20s then I went right back to regular dreaming. It did feel that anytime i could have chosen to just have woken up if I had wanted to. Any idea what that was?

Well, it could be two things:

1- You had Hypnagogic Hallucinations and you were experience double conscious (you were transition from wake to sleep) and you lost conscious during the process.
2- You had a semi-lucid or low control lucid dream.

Do you recall what exactly happened? Did you saw different light patters of colors? Did you heard a buzz? It could have been Sleep Paralysis.

Here is a couple of links that might help you understand this farther.
