People like to reality check if they suspect they have had a false awakening (or even if they don't). I had my first lucid dream last night and I made the noob mistake of not reality checking or stabilising the dream. I've been told that to stabilise a dream you have to try not to get excited or act too hastily when you realise you are lucid dreaming. They tell you to remain aaabsolutely calm otherwise you become too excited and wake up (which is exactly what happened to me - I didn't think to try to do either of the 2 things I was meant to because I wasn't actually trying to lucid).
