Try falling asleep at a time when you can get a full nights rest and wake up naturally, without the harshness of an alarm clock. From my experience, waking up to an alarm clock shocks me out of the transition stage from sleeping to awake and puts my mind immediately into "now what do I have to do" mode. Ideally, you want to fade out of your dreams, not be jolted.

If you really want to up your chances to recall a dream, try taking a multivitamin containing B12, which helps improve focus and awareness. It's in most adult multivitamin supplements as well as things like Vitamin Water (though in a much lesser amount). Also try gorging on some chocolate, which is thought to increase the clarity and vividness of dreams.

Of course, remember to log your dreams in a dream journal if you do manage to recall anything from the night. Even if its just a short thought or a sound or an image or a smell or a taste or a feeling, write it down. Anything and everything is important if you're trying to work your way up from only 3 or 4 dreams a year. Maybe tell us a bit about yourself and your lifestyle and we'll be able to give a more personal diagnosis. It could be stress or any number of things..
