okay, sounds to me like drugs are messing with your recall, you've said it yourself...if i drink, i don't dream, simple.
With regard to recall, you don't say how long you've been documenting your dreams...if you've only just started, it can take a couple of months before you begin to notice recurring themes, and i found it helped me to look back over my dreamjournal in order to spot them more effectively.
In helping to remember your dreams, i find this quite effective: Before you go to bed, simply tell yourself that after you have had a dream, you will wake up and remember it. In the beginning, you might not wake up till the morning, and you might remember bits of a dream, or how you felt. Write this down, it all helps.
As your brain gets used to the suggestion, your recall should improve, and you may find yourself waking in the middle of the night from a dream. If you can wake up enough, write it down there and then, because chances are you'll go back to sleep, and dream about something else, and not remember the second one.
I can make myself remember dreams after waking up without writing them down, but they're never as detailed as they should be, as the second dream tends to crowd the first one.
A good reality check i've heard about is if you are lying in your bed, ask yourself if you are dreaming...False Awakenings sometimes manifest themselves as you waking up from a dream, lying in bed. Except you're actually still asleep!
Hope this helps!
By the way, welcome to DV!
