I think it's awesome that you're still able to practice lucid dreaming in spite of the difficulty falling asleep!
I think that paigeyemps is right on the money! In fact, from what you say, it would appear that you are already practicing a form of DEILD...? I know that getting to sleep initially is slow for you but if you can get back to sleep fast after a light awakening, you will be in perfect position for a DEILD.
