Well, it is possible, and some people used lucidity to combat nightmares and shape them into normal dreams.

in my experience it is...when i was young used to hav the occasional nightmare and get scared...then i naturally started gainin awareness in dreams...and now many dreams that wud hav been a nightmare in the past are just another normal dream with a horror aspect to it.

Lucidity is a great way to combat the fear...if you can appreciate that no real harm could come to you and that the dream isnt real then it allows you to go forward in the dream without the fear.
I cant control my dreams totally however i can end them whenever i want and i think that is another lucid aspect. If i get too scared i can just end it...sometimes iv found an escape from the dream...i want to leave so i find the vehicle or safe place tat allows me to escape etc.. so yes lucidity is def possible in nightmares and it can help control ur fear.

      Hope this helps

Oh, heck yeah. Half my LD's are nightmares. In fact, that's why I first started to explore lucid dreams; I had nightmares quite badly from childhood on and wanted to figure out how to control them.

I remember one in particular where my stepfather (let's say I didn't have a good relationship with him, though that's an understatement) was attempting to kill my by dropping boulders on me. I spent some time running; but after a while I realized I was dreaming. I didn't know what else to do but keep dodging boulders, though (fear can do that to you); but eventually I realized that since I was dreaming, my stepfather could not really kill me, and therefore I had no reason to be afraid of the boulders. So the next time a boulder came at me, I deliberately stepped into its path. Everything went white for a few minutes; and then another dream began.

Lucid nightmares are less scary than normal nightmares because you have some control, and because you can often wake yourself up from them if you so desire (though I prefer not to; I tend towards insomnia and will stay asleep if I can help it). You'll probably still get the adrenaline rush of fear; but you'll certainly feel less helpless about the whole matter.
