      Is this normal????

I just signed up for this forum as of 2:31am my time. You might wonder why someone is up that late, but I felt it in my heart that something or someplace was calling me. Trust me I understand how silly this sounds, but I've always been searching for something. You see I consider myself a Observer of Life.

It's hard to explain fully how I came to this, but when I was younger I was picked on very badly. Plus my parents were fighting which made life even tougher. My parents aren't bad parents, but they do have their problems as do most parents. Yet at this time it is when I tried to take my own life. I would sit with a knife at my heart ready to push it in, but never did I have the strength to actually take the final pludge.

I always felt like some force wouldn't allow it. There were times when I would try to run away as well, but always ended up coming back because I knew I had no place to go. I remember crying out and asking why I was being forced to suffer. It was also around this time that I became very spiritual. By spiritual I don't mean religous or religion. I adapted a form of meditation that I used regularly. to allow myself inner peace. This might have been why I started to notice something odd about my ownself.

You see my hearing became very senative, but most importantly I was able to reach REM dreaming state very quickly. Even though I'm out of pratice I believe I've been able to reach that state in under 7 minutes of going to sleep. I could also have a FULL dream within 1 or 2 minutes of time. The reason why I know this is because I used to wake up, take a shower, and then lay back down for a little while. When I lay back down I would usually fall back to sleep.

There's something else odd about my dreaming patterns. I remember them in full detail and not just one dream but I've remembered up to a large number of dreams in a single night. The dreams were as real as this world too. My prospectives in my dreams change very often. Sometimes I'm looking through my own eyes and other times it is almost like a movie where I'm seeing things from above. When the movie prospective happens I still feel what is going on with my dream character.

The reason I ask is this normal is because there is always a certain element to my dreams. When I take control of my dream or my dream characters is in a dangerious event my dream character becomes God like and sometimes even says they are a God. One dream where this happen my character told another in the dream that he was sorry that this is a dream and when I wake up everything would disappear. The character then responded that this isn't a dream and tried to say they are real. Is this normal?

Hello AHiddenSaint. First off let me just comment on how strong you are for not taking your own life and really just living and dealing with all the shit that has happened to you. That's awesome that you could do that. It is possible that some people could reach REM more quickly than others, but it is more likely that you just remember your NREM dreams. It is possible to dream while not in REM, EM ones just tend to be more memorable to most people. It usually takes at least an hour to get into REM because the sleep cycles goes all the way up until it is going to reach REM, but it never does on the first cycle. The cycle repeats again and THEN reaches it. As for you Dream Characters… In vivid dreams everything may seem very real, even the people. But it is important to keep in mind, that in a dream, you have control No One Else. I always end up having some stubborn DC (dream character) who likes to pretend it is their dream and not mine. You just have to deal with them and convince yourself they have no control. Trying to convince them is pointless since they are not real, but since you created everything around you, if you believe they are not real, they will go away. I remember about 4 or 5 dreams each night, usually more if I get enough sleep. Your dreams seem pretty normal to me, just try to focus more and convince yourself that your dreams are your own so you are master of them Good luck, IM glad you found Dream Views, we are truly a great community of people. Well the other thing I forgot to mention is I have been experting lately on myself. Sometimes I wake up and when I'm half awake I see bugs or something that plays on fear. This is during the state of waking up and still half asleep. I did learn to tell the difference between this, but sometimes it can get tough because usually it's spiders I see and I do have a fear of spiders. I'll usually one crawling on a certain place big enough for me to see then as I get up to take a closer look it disappears.

Normal, in the sense of "average" or "common"? No. But then, neither is being a musical prodigy or a genius-level scientist "normal". You seem to be a natural at lucid dreaming, and while the majority of people are not, that's not a bad thing. You're lucky; enjoy it.

You seem to have what I'd call an intense desire to experience life, including dreams; and good control of your own mind. These are positive things, and likely what helped you resist your suicidal urges when you were younger. Your subconscious knew you were worth more than you thought you were; and wouldn't let you die.

I myself have a history of depression; and I don't know how many times I'd been tempted to run out onto the highway in front of a semi. I don't think my mind (or maybe God) let me die, either.

I don't know whether you believe in the supernatural, or whether you believe the human mind is simply more powerful than people give it credit for; but either one could explain what you've experienced.

Your dream-perspective shifting is pretty normal. My dreams are in first-person; but you'll see others whose dreams are in third-person, both at different times, a weird mix of the two, or maybe even something completely off-the-wall like collective consciousness or the feeling of not being involved at all.

Being involved in something dangerous while dreaming is very common for me; I'm not sure that it's common for everyone, though. My most intense dreams are almost invariably violent and deadly; sometimes I die, sometimes I have to kill others; sometimes death or torture or mass mayhem (like wars or plagues) are involved. And, often times, I find myself acting in heroic ways--anything from taking a bullet for someone else to destroying entire armies. Thankfully, I've yet to find myself the villain... I don't know whether I'd ever trust myself if I dreamed of murdering an innocent. So, I don't know if it's normal for everyone, but it's run-of-the-mill for me.

Feeling godlike when you are in control of your dreams seems about right to me: After all, your dreams are yours to do with what you like, and you're the one controlling them. I'd say it's no wonder that you feel so in-control and powerful. The real world just doesn't give you that degree of control.
