That's a legitimate concern. Is this what's keeping you from wanting to learn about lucid dreaming? If so, then consider this: All your life, every single night, you've had about 5 dreams. You don't remember all these do you? Of course not--it's our nature to forget them.
Now, in a lucid dream, you are in fact more awake than you are in a normal dream. The part of your brain that deals with reasoning is up and running, which allows you to take control of your dream. If you go along with the dream as normal, it won't last any longer than any typical dream (and you've most likely already had over 30,000 of these dreams). Some choose to perform various techniques to prolong a dream, but you don't have to do that if it makes you feel uncomfortable--although there is nothing to worry about.
Now, considering that much of your brain is actually awake while you lucid dream and you're more awake than you've ever been in a normal dream, it's very easy to get woken up entirely. Since you have direct access to your sub-conscious, you could say, "I'm going to spin around now, and this is going to wake me up," and it will very likely work. If not, once the REM period is finished, you'll naturally lose the dream anyway. Not to mention if someone bangs on your door and yells "Wake up!" you'll bounce out of bed!
There's nothing to be afraid of.
