      Waking up

One of my concerns is that I will be trapped in my dream and won't be able to wake up. If I want to wake up, is there anyway I can force myself to?

If U want to get trapped in a dream U have to be in coma. It can only happen to people with serious physical brain injury or with diabetes. So i think U shouldn't worry yourself
If U dream U will wake up certainly - REM phase lasts only 5-30 min.

Acutely, they last from 10 minutes to 100 minutes increasing in duration the longer you sleep. And it is impossible to get trapped in your dream. you would wake up

That's a legitimate concern. Is this what's keeping you from wanting to learn about lucid dreaming? If so, then consider this: All your life, every single night, you've had about 5 dreams. You don't remember all these do you? Of course not--it's our nature to forget them.

Now, in a lucid dream, you are in fact more awake than you are in a normal dream. The part of your brain that deals with reasoning is up and running, which allows you to take control of your dream. If you go along with the dream as normal, it won't last any longer than any typical dream (and you've most likely already had over 30,000 of these dreams). Some choose to perform various techniques to prolong a dream, but you don't have to do that if it makes you feel uncomfortable--although there is nothing to worry about.

Now, considering that much of your brain is actually awake while you lucid dream and you're more awake than you've ever been in a normal dream, it's very easy to get woken up entirely. Since you have direct access to your sub-conscious, you could say, "I'm going to spin around now, and this is going to wake me up," and it will very likely work. If not, once the REM period is finished, you'll naturally lose the dream anyway. Not to mention if someone bangs on your door and yells "Wake up!" you'll bounce out of bed!

There's nothing to be afraid of.

the REM period only lasts a matter of minutes, but that doesn't mean the dream lasts only that long. in fact some people use time extension techniques, i've heard of people spending years in a dream.

Dreams last only a few minutes. The Sleep Cycle must go on. REM Sleep is only a few minutes. And then one cannot sleep for more than 10 or 12 hours anyway, unless one had been very very run down. So, your dreams will of course come to an end. Indeed, if you really think about it, you will not remember ever having had a dream which lasted more than several minutes. Yes, late in the night when the REM Cycles occur closer together, we might remember series of Dreams, but when the details are examined, no dream lasts for more than a few minutes.

Insomnia is the greater danger. There are people who can't fall asleep, but rarely ever a person who does not wake up. Just look! The World keeps spinning because everybody manages to wake from their Dreams and get to Work.

You have absolutely nothing to worry about.

Oh, and then there is a problem of people waking up really before they should. Particularly in dreams where the Dreamer is Killed, the dreamer often assumes the Dream is over and they awake prematurely. Remember, that if you are killed in a dream, if you can only keep the dream going for just 10 or 20 more seconds, you will return to life and be able to get up from having been dead.
