I have trouble getting to sleep with lucidity in mind

Whenever i try to fall asleep, i try to focus my mind, but im having issues trying to get asleep while being focused. I focus in on the swirling lights inside my eyes, and block out all thoughts but attaining lucidity in my sleep. The problem is, when im at the point when im about to fall asleep, and the lights in my eyes are the brightest, i fell numb, and feel a little shudder. Then, my heart starts beating VERY fast, and i eventually lose it. However, if i do not concentrate on lucidity, or let my mind wander, i fall asleep fairly easily, but i do not have lucid dreams. Any tips on how to overcome this? Or am i doing something wrong?

Hi Slacker. I have heard of other Dv members experiencing this before. From what I gathered, drinking something caffeinated a 1/2 hour before bed helped them enough to remain focused without keeping them up. try it.

      Follow up

Well, i tried it, and it helped, but it did now work. What happened, was i was able to sustain the almost sleeping state indefinitely, but now matter how hard i tried, i could not fall asleep.
I did fall asleep my normal method, however, and i had a pretty interesting dream (however, it was not lucid.) It was a recurring dream, one of the few i actually remember having before. Maybe ill post my dream journal later, with it in it. I started this morning keeping track of dreams.

Are there any other methods i can try? I still found it hard to maintain focus on the colors inside my eyes, and often found my mind slightly wandering. I kept it in check though.

That's quite contradicting in itself. Falling asleep while concentrated isn't really something possible or needed.

The WILD technique that utilizes hypnagogic imagery is used not by concentrating on the imagery but by passively observing it.

Thus, focusing one's mind is exactly what one is not to do while attempting a WILD or WILD-like technique. Passive observation causes the greatest results.
