Hello, tryna-improve. Welcome to DV. I hope you find everything you need here. To answer your question, I do not think that LDs connect with your physical body. There's a lot to be learned from LDs, but I don't think that lifting weights in your dreams will give you real muscles when you wake up, if you know what I mean.
Hey... I'm a-gonna be my usual self, and disagree here, albeit only half-disagreeing and in an obscure and off-topic, by-the-way manner...
This idea is based on my own experiences of (unsucessfully) initiating a WILD, and is kinda obscure, but anyway, here goes:
At a certain phase of tmy WILD attempts, I get to a time, shortly after sleep paralysis, that I can imagine myself being pulled up off my bed. Now, often when this happens, my real body's muscles tense and push up against the bed, often ACTUALLY lifting me, through sheer upper-body strength, a bit off the bed. This only happens when I concentrate on it.
ANYWAY, when doing this, I find that I can hold this position for a long time, without my muscles aching. I can hold this sort of position for way, WAY longer than I could if I was FULLY awake... for instance, I can hold my arms out life an eagle, at a slight angle up away from the bed, despite the duvet pushing down on them, for a good few minutes. That's heaps! You try holding your arms out perpendicular to your body in real life. It's hard, I assure you, even if you're strong, and takes a fair bit of endurance. Now, while not building strength per se, this may help "toning" and building endurance. Also, tensing and relaxing your muscles when in this half-asleep half-awake stage may also help toning... Sorta like stretching or yoga may do.
This is admittedly obscure, and isn't exactly "working out" in a dream, but is rather subconsciously making your body tense and move during sleep paralysis... And yes, this IS during sleep paralysis, as I can't consciously move my muscles without putting in a great deal of mental effort. Rather, my body's movements result from "imagining" I am being pulled off the bed...
Practically, of course, this is obscure and perhaps not as effective as, perhaps, real-life yoga. But it's great fun, and kinda weird... give it a try, if ya want!
