As for why we have false awakenings (FAs), I don't know. However, one habit that could help you if you have a lot of FAs - which it sounds like you do - is to do a reality check (RC) every time you wake up. It may be hard to remember at first, but remind yourself before going to bed that when you wake up, do an RC.
As for summoning evil creatures, I think the first step is just being aware that it is possible (obviously). I think th ebest thing to do would be to come up with a plan of action for when you become lucid next time. Decide what you plan to do when you become lucid before you go to bed and stick to that plan. Then when you do realize that you are dreaming, don't give yourself time to think about other possibilities, but follow through with your plan. If any monsters appear, you can try freezing the dream and escaping, or just transporting yourself to another place in the dream.
It's not an issue of self-confidence, but of simply thinking too much
