Hello, this is my first post here. In the last year or so, I've made an interesting discovery. It has to do with the very first REM cycle of the night. I wouldn't have remembered this except for the fact that I woke up during it more than once.

I've discovered something I like to call "dreamlets". They seem to be the first dreams of the night, but they are very different from any normal dreams. This type of dream always seems to incorporate the construction of something, and the dream is always vague. The motion of whatever is being made seems to continue on and on. In one dream, I was witnessing this little creature that might have been something like a mechanical spider-like thing. It kept on going through this motion where it looked as if it were stringing these objects together. It seems like this motion continued for a long time. It was very abstract.

In another early dream, I seemed to have these shapes in my hand that I was trying to fit together. I can't remember anything else happening. I wonder if there is anyone else who has had these types of dreams. Like I said, they are always super-abstract and always seem to feature only one thing: something being built.

This has facinated me for a while. Perhaps I am experiencing some type of mental defrag, which I am subconsciously symbolising involuntarily by dreaming of it? Anyway, it's my guess that I'm not the only one this happens to, and I think it probably happens every night on some level. Maby there has already been a ton of research on this that I'm not aware of. I think there may be something to this. Please tell me what you think.

Hi, it sounds to me like you've got some very vivid Hypnagogic Imagery going on there.
There's more on it in the tutorial section, you can actually use it for entering a lucid dream.
HI happens just as you are dropping off to sleep, and it can take many forms, such as random shapes and colours, or sounds, or as you described it.
If you can get the hang of the wake initiated lucid dreaming (WILD) tutorial, you'll be well on your way to lucid dreams.
Welcome to DV by the way.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

I get the auditary form of that. I start hearing voices, like random snatches of conversation. I can't understand any of them unless I focus on one, though. They're funny sometimes.

as i was falling asleep last night, i said to myself, i will remember my dream, i will know i'm lucid, i will know i'm lucid, i will know i'm lucid. then i saw dinosaurs running at me and i said, "Holy Crap! i wish i was dreaming!"

I guess I should have mentioned that I only have experienced this 2 or maby 3 times that I can remember, but I suspect it happens a lot more.
