(first post&#33

Has anyone here been able to recall past events in their life that they have repressed or forgotten? Would this be dangerous? I have heard many times that our brains remember everything, but we just can't access all our memories. Is it possible to access them through lucid dreams?

Hi CQ,

While I have not personally experienced the recall of repressed memories, I do believe it is very possible to do so through dreams. When we are in a dream state, we are in a similar frame of mind (if not the same) as being under hypnosis. We are also (if you believe in the Freudian teachings) at a point where we have access to our subconscious and other "protected" places in our minds.

As for being safe or not - that depends on whether you have someone around that can help you or how traumatic the memory is you're trying to recall.

Welcome to the forum cqx

I agree, I think that repressed memories could be remembered.

Its believed that your dreams come from memories and thoughts. If this is true then whats stopping old memories coming back?
It depends on the situation on whether the memory is good or bad and how well the person can cope with it.

Hmm... I've never actually tried to seek out memories in LDs - once I get better at control I think I'll try some experiments with that - like finding my "memory palace" like in Hannibal (the book) - an extremely useful skill if it can be developed

But in non-LDs I have dreamt before about finding things I thought I had lost, like my student card, and then actually finding them in the same place in real life
Be aware of your thoughts, for your thoughts become words
Choose your words, for your words become actions
Control your actions, for your actions become habits
Watch your habits, for your habits become your destiny...

In short, our thoughts become our lives

Ill tell you right now dont go to a person who will hypnotise you....this we lead to false memories. And sometimes these false memories can cause lots of problems.

Not always false memories, but it could happen. Hypnotism is really just believing that the treatment will work.

This is not true - at the very most, it is a very contentious claim that is much debated amoung psychologists. But from myu first-year uni psych class, I seem to remember that there's a significant amount of evidence that memories "degrade" exponentially over time. what our brain remembers and indeed sees of the present is also very limited... it's all to do with the idea of sensory attention.
