I have done some extensive reading of lucidity / sleep paralysis these past few days (thanks NeAvO and irishcream), but I did not come across exactly what I felt last night. I have been able to induce the beginning of sleep paralysis (SP) within a few minutes of going to bed each night. However, this is the first night I had a room to myself and a quiet environment, so I really wanted to take advantage of this.

When I typically try to induce SP, I lay on my back; within a few minutes, my body begins to buzz (even sway violently side to side) even though I know that I am not moving at all in my bed. Then, I begin to notice my heart beating really fast, and my breathing is distractingly hard to control - I think it is because I am trying to hard to mentally note everything that is happening, and I lose focus. Anyways, I never really get beyond this - only varying intensities of it.

Last night I tried to clear my mind for a few minutes before I let my body loose. This was extremely hard to do as random thoughts and songs jumped in and out. I did my best, but songs keep lingering after the random thoughts left my head. At this point, I let my body be seduced by the events leading to sleeping and more importantly: sleep paralysis. This time, my body did not really buzz at all; instead, it got extremely heavy. My head tipped back without me moving it, and my hands seemed to sink down even more onto the bed sheets.

The Odd Part: The right side of my body began to get numb - really really numb. It started in the right side of my face and my right hand. It felt like I no longer had a hand any more. However, my legs and left arm just felt heavy still. My heart started to beat fast again, and I tried my best to ignore it and focus on what my eyes could see. My right eye felt "open" - wide open. However, my left eye still felt shut considering that they were both closed. I could move my right eye freely, and I even remember blinking - however, everything I could see was pitch black. All of a sudden, there was a white shade at the bottom right corner of the dark space my right eye was looking at. I tried not to focus on it because when I did, I seemed to push it out of view (As I looked down and to the right, the shade was pushed down and to the right out of view).

To my disappointment, my dog started barking because it needed to be let out to go to the bathroom. I was reluctant to get up, but I could already feel the numbness fading. I did a few reality checks - just in case. After realizing I was not in a dream, I began to walk but it was slightly annoying to do - my legs kept kinda "giving out" and I felt really unstable. My face was also extremely "tight" making it awkward to smile or raise my eyebrows.

Does anyone else experience stuff like this as they try to induce SP as they are going to bed? I was really curious about the numbness starting in my right hand and face - as I haven't heard anything about it having a starting spot.

No problem with the help Oh and theres a detailed tutorial on inducing Sleep Paralysis, which was written by Irishcream.

Well that was a good SP that you got, seemed like you almost WILDed as well. About the right side of your body: Maybe you just was concentrating on the right side of your body more, so you was more aware of it happening to that side. Then after time you became more and more aware.

The only experience I've had with SP is the funny vibrations and lights flashing.

Thanks again for insight - next time I will try and focus on other parts of my body and see if it results similarly. Anyways, I have a lot of trouble controlling my breathing and heart beat. When I got up to let my dog out, I put my hand on my chest;sure enough, it was rapidly beating as though I had just finished a light job around the neighborhood. Is this something that I am going to have to get used too, or will it settle down when I more acclimated to inducing SP?

Just this morning i was trying to WILD and almost everything you just described happened to me. I had the same exact problem with heart beat and not being able to concentrate. I also found breathing difficult. And i know exactly what you are talking about with those colors moving everytime you try to look right at them it is really frustrating. But do you normally go through this before you WILD?

Your reply is very comforting, I had actually just read your post. However, I did not have any suggestions for you as I seem to be in the same boat as you (glad I'm not alone though). I know that the colors are normal, and that focusing on them can make you lose your concentration resulting in a non-lucid dream state. I have never actually tried waking up at 4:00 AM and then going back to bed, but I think that may be the missing piece to my puzzle (I actually have the alarm set for 4:00 AM right now ). I am hoping that the heart beat and irregularly uncontrollable breathing is a result of me being "gitty" as irishcream put it. Hopefully we can figure this out together.

I've had the misfortune of experiencing full sleep paralysis on several occasions. The first time was when I woke up, and I saw the flashing lights of a police car were illuminating the walls of my room. What was scary was that I couldn't move or speak at all. As for the police car, it was across the road.

Unfortunately, every time I experienced sleep paralysis, I had awakened rather abruptly. The loss of motor functions wasn't that horrible, but the loss of my own voice was the most frightening.

Probably the most frustrating thing ever happened last night. At about 1:15 AM, I went to bed and started my meditation / get my body loose and my eye lids heavy. The sleep paralysis started in my hands again, but they started in both hand symmetrically at my pinkie. I was very patient because I had no reason to get a good night sleep, and I was very curious to where this may lead. Random muscles in my body began to contract and then get numb. Sometimes the numbness was annoying (almost painful); how many people have had their shoulder fall asleep or their chest?

I spent remained motionless and just thought as my body was taken over by sleep paralysis. This process seemed to take a LONG time, and the last body part to go was my face. After my body was "sleeping", it felt like my body was meshed together as one big blob. My brain could not distinguish my hand from the hip it was laying next too. My legs were touching when I fell asleep, but I could no longer feel where they were touching let alone the blanket beneath them.

To my joy, my heart rate and breathing never got uncontrollable (I was not anxious but patient rather - I just let things come to me). However weird/new things did happen: I noticed I was getting warm (probably from having two blankets, and my tongue made a swallowing motion automatically every once in a while (this startled me the first time but I learned to ignore it).

The images I got were awful and got boring after a while. The lights came in lines, but they seemed to leave just as fast as they came. I kept telling myself that I was only a few minutes away from lucidity. The only thing that kept me sane was the fact that I was singing songs in my head (became subconsciously done after a while). I did hear "white noise" and a dog barking constantly that I am 99% sure did not exist.

After this eternity of waiting, I started losing focus and random thoughts jumping in and out of my head. Staying focused was a lot easier said than done. I got really mad and fought my sleep paralysis (started moving all my body parts) - I felt like I had a casing all the way around my body 1mm off my skin (I was able to move or thought I moved it a negligible distance before it hit the barrier. It did not take long at all to break free, but every body part weighed 1000 pounds and was numb as hell. I did every reality check I could think of, but I passed them all. My body felt weird, and my eyes had a lot of trouble with clarity (the object I looked at was in focus, but everything around it was a blur). My body normalized and so did my vision in a few min.

To my disappointment, I looked at the clock and it read 3:34 AM. I was sleep paralyzed anywhere from an hour to two hours (closer to two). I knew it felt like an eternity lying there, but I had no real gauge of time. I also got a HUGE HEADACHE. My brain felt like it was punishing me for tricking it all this time.
