I've had similar experiences.
One time it must have happened to me 3 times in what must have been only 10-20 minutes...

I was up in the middle of the night trying to get some sleep... when suddenly I couldn't move. I saw weird lights and images... and heard some kinda freaky really loud noises, the sound reminded me of a lot of people yelling at once. I managed to wake myself up, but the next 2 times I tried to go to sleep it happened again. And after experiencing that I can definately see how that could turn into a lucid dream.
