That actually happened to me. When I was still semi-new to the interwebz I spoke with "u"s and "r"s and said see you later as "C U L8R". Then I got on this online roleplaying game and some guy teaches me that when you speak properly you get more respect. From that day on I strove to at least spell out my words.
In response some of my less than scholarly peers started calling me names. To them speaking well on the internet is the height of being a nerd. Eh, screw them.
