Yes, this was hipnogogic transition ( in the form of sounds ), and sleep paralysis. It is quite common that they happen naturally, without you trying to induce it.
Sleep deprivation increases the chance of this happening, because the brain tries to compensate for the lack of REM, with strong and long REM cycles ( This is called REM Rebound )
