      hearing voices

      Sometimes as I start to drift off to sleep I hear conversations in my head.....
      Has this ever happened to anyone else?

      I never get full conversations, but I hear random things sometimes. They are usually a friend's voice saying something that I heard throughout the day. I know a lot of people hear things while attempting to WILD. I don't, but that's just me.

      Hallucinations like this are a common stage in WILD. They happen as you go into deep relaxation and they tell you when you're close to entering sleep paralysis, the next stage. Even though I haven't successfully carried out this method yet, I've had some promising results, along with other types of hallucinations, like images and movement.

      WILD might be a good technique for you as you seem to hear these sounds.

      I get this all the time, friends, family, and strange voices as well. I can actually purposefully induce them as a relaxation exercise. Usually they just say random 3-5 word phrases.

      Yes, I often get these as I drift in and out of sleep in the morning...and also when I am about to drift off to take a nap.

      I've heard they are called hynagogic audio hallucinations (Thanks Oneironaught).

      For me they only last a few seconds but they are often really strange. I occasionally record them in my dream journal.

      To give you an example, here are some from not too long ago that I had written up.

      Man's voice: "That's what I really want to hear about--your account."

      Lady's voice: "We're going to be on the 8th floor."

      Man: "Write down that [couldn't understand name] didn't adopt her."

      Man: "Make sure you get the little badges."

      Small elf-like voices in unison: "Our enemy is Canis Greyus--the Wolf."

      I really don't know where these particular phrases come from, but I suppose they are no more strange than my dreams themselves.

      Edit:

      Like Skysaw said, I can often induce them, espeically if I have had one and want more, I just relax and listen....and record.

      It's quite common, it's called hypnagogic audio. It's a good way to tell if you are entering SP ect.

      Hypnagogia = visual
      Hypnopompia = audible

      If I may make a correction:

      Hypnagogia: while falling asleep
      Hypnapompia: while awakening

      Doh! Just when I thought I had it all figured out

      Although why the distinction between when it happens - it's the WHAT that needs distinction.

      I've always thought there was too much jargon with lucid dreaming.

      Sometimes when this happens to me, those conversations become more and more clear until I am entirely in a dream and continue on. Happens when I try to WILD.

      They tend to fold out into scenes. Kinda like this morning. A while after my room mate left this morning I heard him talking, then he started talking about his girlfriend...

      "She'll be here"

      Then I was in a full blown dream at those words. And when I woke up the voices lingered a little after I was walking around. I think it's because I woke up and went back to sleep rather quickly. Could have WILD'ed or FILD but I was too tired. Didn't think too much about the voices until later.
      In search of lost time, with the magic of true light.
