First, spontaneous lucidity is fairly common for DILDs. More than half of my lucid dreams happen that way, without any reality checks at all, and from what I've read, it's the same for other people.
Second, there are many reasons to why that reality check didn't work. First of all, there's only about a sixty percent chance of text changing on the first re-reading, so if it doesn't change, you should look away and then re-read it again, which increases the odds to 90%. Second, since it was fairly short, that probably increased the odds of it staying the same, since two characters are much easier for the mind to keep track of than say, a word or two. Third, how well a reality check works varies from person to person, so that one might not work as well for you. Personally, I prefer the one where you pinch your nose shut and attempt to breathe through it, and know that if you can breathe you're dreaming.
As for spinning to change locations, that varies from person to person as well. Some people can use spinning to change locations and stabilize the dream easily, but when I've tried it, all it did was increase my chances of waking up. I think you have to visualise your destination when you teleport by spinning, so if you didn't do that, that could be your problem.
