      Sleep paralysis

      Hi,
I've been reading through this site for a few days and I'm amazed at how much there is to this lucid dreaming. I've had just a few in the past with a little percarious control. When I've become lucid, it feels like the wall between sleeping and waking gets a lot thinner and the dream setting starts to seem contrived and artificial, but I hope to learn how to change these things through the info here. Anyway, before I make this too long, one of my big interests is awareness durning sleep paralysis (I don't know if that's what you call it here). I've never liked experiencing it even though I learned a few years ago it's a doorway to LD. I've had SP all my life and I'd like to hear anyone else's experience's or thoughts on the subject.

Thanks a lot. I'm looking forward to learning a lot from this.

      Hello, Dreadstar, to Dreamviews!
I've personally had little experience with sleep paralysis (we usually call it SP, for short). We have a sleep paralysis tutorial, which explains a bit about the experience, and how to get into it.
You can use SP to get into a LD using the WILD method. These are called wake-initiated-lucid-dreams, and involve staying consious through the SP stage, and eventually into the dream stage.
As for your problems with the clarity of LDs, one way to fix it is to shout "Clarity Now!", or "Increase Clarity" in the dream. You can also try to create a tool which will do it for you.
I hope this helped a little, and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask

Thanks Webmaster. I'll look at those. Before this, all the info I had on LD was from "Waking Life". I assume that movie has been discussed to death here.

I was wondering if anyone has ever had a bad SP experience. Every SP I've ever had has been involuntary and unpleasant and often scary. Has anyone else ever had bad SP's. They've been worse than any nightmare I've ever had, but there have been a couple times I rode it into a lucid dream that was pretty good. But most times, the SP was so bad that I forced myself to wake up. I remember stretches of time where I was tired during the day because my sleep was disrupted by bad SP's. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I hope I'm using the right terminology.

      Welcome to Dream Views Dreadstar.

I never liked sleep paralysis either, had it frequently since I was about five years old right up until a couple of years ago. And even after I learned that it could be used to get into a lucid dream, I still didn't like the experience of waking up paralysed. Not a nice feeling at all.

And yes, I'd be tired the next day because I'd wake up repeately during the night in SP. I know where you're coming from there. Mine just disappeared after I started lucid dreaming intentionally. Which is nice. Are you looking to manipulate this experience or be rid of it?

SP? !!! so thats what it is. my very first experiences with LD involved my last experience with the most frightening SP ever. once every so often, i used to experience an SP dream where i would hear and feel the footsteps of some ungodly demon approaching my room. weird thing is, i think my eyes were open and i could clearly see my room, but yet i could not move my body at all, just clench my fists and move my eyes. each time i had this dream this overwhelming paralyzing fear gripped my whole body as the "demon" approached. I would try to scream out, but no good. so I called for Christ, but the demon still came closer. the last time i had this dream, i fought back for the first time. First, my room shifted into this dark mesa in the desert. I still couldnt see the demon, but knew where it was. So, i contolled my dream by saying "I do have power" and "let it explode out from me!" it was at that point i raised my right hand palm forward and released a dbz style energy blast that literally erased the entire dream world. I then entered a new dream without any fear at all, but with no control. ever since that night, i've had no SP, and several minor LD's with the ability to fly but only when needed, such as falling and nearly hitting the ground or escaping a nuclear blast. Yeah, when i heard about this LD stuff, I was totally stoked!!

It happens to some people, and there's not a whole lot you can do about it . Bad hallucinations can just be a part of hypnogogia (the state between dreaming and waking, where SP is usually felt). However, a lot of people have SP where all they feel is vibrations, and sometimes a falling sensation.
About Waking Life... well yeah let's just say it's pretty well known around here . Same goes for Vanilla Sky. I've never seen either, I probably should.

Oh, and your terminology is great! I can't find anything wrong with it

Thanks for the feedback. The descriptions of SP sound familiar, especially yours, Allul69. The only difference between my SP's and most others I've heard about is mine happen when I'm first falling asleep. Once I'm past the first hour or so, it doesn't happen again until maybe the next night. But that supernatural stuff sounds familiar. I know it's all an illusion and the next morning when I remember the experience, I think what a wuss I was to be scared of it. But it's like since the SP is being created by my own mind that it's tailor made to scare me. I can't move, someone is there to harm me and I do the only real motivated praying I've ever done. But to answer Vex Kitten's question, I think I'd like to use SP to go into a lucid dream. Or just do away with SP's altogether.

I've gotten the SP before sleep too but usually I would wake up and be paralysed. You're going to have to make up your mind to not be afraid of ANYTHING that happens in this state. If you can get past that initial fear there will be a lucid dream waiting for you just around the corner.

      Good luck.

I think I must have worse SP's than anyone or maybe I'm just I bigger wuss than anyone. But all this feedback should help. I haven't had an SP for a while (I think at least a year) but there have been times in the last few months when I was aware more or less as I fell asleep, so I must have been aware while my body was being paralyzed by whatever chemical the brain releases when we sleep. When I have a bad SP, it's never halfway. I hear a huge rushing sound like water or air and it feels like I'm being drawn down a dark hole. Hopefully next time this happens I'll be thinking about everything you guys have said here.
      Thanks a lot!

just a guess, but what you may be hearing is the sound of your own blood flowing in the veins of your ears. i dunno, but when i had those sp occurances, I was laying on my side as usual. my theory was that the thunderous "foot steps" was my brains way of incorporating the sounds of my heart beat as heard through my ears into my dream. having real sounds mix into your dreams can be an interesting thing....like your alarm clock going off and you get up thinking that you are part of a SWAT bomb squad trying to dissarm the thing!

      yes!

i've had 2 terrible incidences of sleep paralysis in the past 2 months and had no idea what was going on. both times i heard people entering my room and making noise. it doesn't sound so scary to people i tell, but i'v enever been so frightened in my life. and i can't even open my eyes! it happened last night, which is why i'm here, and I can see where, if it happens agian, I could certainly turn it into a lucid dream. I am so relieved!

I know what you're talking about. I've read about sleep paralysis on this site, and it seems like for most people, it's not a problem. But for some reason, it can be terrifying for me. I'm usually not afraid or even believe in anything supernatural in my waking life, but when I experience sleep paralysis while I'm comscious, I feel like the devil is in the room with me, or some sort of supernatural entity. I've read that people who think they've been abducted by aliens were really experiencing sleep paralysis. Years ago, I saw an episode of the X-Files, long before I'd ever read about sleep paralysis or even heard the term. A guy woke up on his bed surrounded by aliens. He couldn't move but he was terrified. I recognized that as what I go through when falling asleep sometimes. Different cultures have different terms or explanations as to what is going on during sleep paralysis. I was relieved the first time I saw all the info on it on the internet. If I never experienced it and someone told me about it, I'd think they were crazy!
