It starts out barely visible then gets more vivid the closer I get to sleep (i assume). Sometimes it becomes colored, but usually it remains a very faint grey or barely dicernable greenish tint.

Though, sometimes just before the HI forms into a scene I'll feel this odd little shifting sensation in my mind that alerts me that I've just fallen asleep, and at that point I open my eyes and wake up in a dream, usually still lying on my bed.

Don't focus too hard on the HI, let it do whatever and passively watch. Don't focus too hard on any one aspect of it. Take it all in and every so often silently reaffirm that you're dreaming.
Does it feel like you're imagining the scene or seeing it with your eyes? I've had some pretty vivid visuals before that look like another place. I've even felt like I was half in that place, but I think I got too anxious and tried to open my eyes only to find I was still where I was before the dream.
