Hmm, strange. There is a phenomenon called "eye flutter" that is commonly observed in subjects going into hypnosis. Could it have been that?

There certainly are drugs that can induce lucid dreams, but melatonin is not very effective in that regard. The only mechanism by which melatonin could help induce vivid or lucid dreams is via the so-called REM rebound effect. Many people on Dreamviews suggest B6, but this is also quite ineffective. If you want to go the chemical route to lucid dreaming there are vastly more effective drugs, many of which are described in the book "Advanced Lucid Dreaming" by Thomas Yuschak. Check out the Lucid Aids forum for more information.
