I think you should continue with your journal. Just writing out the dreams may help you to understand them, which may make them go away or get better. Also, you may begin to recognize your bad dreams for what they are while they are happening--this would be a good tool for getting lucid, and would enable you to change the dreams and prevent the from becoming nightmares.

In "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" by Stephen LaBerge, he describes how people who had nightmares used lucid dreaming to get rid of them.
