      new

Hi, this is my first time here, as, to be honest, I only really found out about lucid dreaming today. I have read some of the tutorials which are very helpful but just wanted some advice on my specific issues if this is ok. Since I can remember I have, every now and again, become aware that I am dreaming but have usually only been able to control the dream if something terrible is about to happen to me where every time without fail I have been able to wake myself at will. However, if I become aware I am dreaming and decide I want something to happen, I always know in the dream that it will not happen, simply because I want it to. Nightmares have been pretty common for me all my life, and another thing is that the visual clarity of my dreams has never been very good. I usually can't fill in the details of e.g. a person's face - I just know in the dream that a human figure is supposed to represent a particular person. I'd like to explore lucid dreaming but with all this in mind, do you think I am necessarily a good candidate?

I think everyone can get good at LD'ing with enough dedication and practide.
What you mentioned about trying to controll things but failing, because you knew you would fail is a common trap.... Because you are thinking its not going to work, it is not. If you want to summon something, think its going ot happen and it will... but if you're uncertain and thinking its not going to happen, it wont! Dreams are all based around what you think is going to happen next.

Thanks for the information. I'm not really sure what my previous experience would be classed as. I've always had voices in my head shortly prior to falling asleep. Sometimes these are of people I know and sometimes of strangers but more often than not they make no sense at all. I also get very clear images of faces in my head around this time and they are usually of people I don't recognise. I have difficulty making what I want happen when I realise I'm in a dream but some dreams I have had have been so real that I have actually become frightened by how real they are whilst I am in the dream, even though nothing bad has actually happened, and begged people in the dream to wake me for fear that I would never be able to wake on my own. Also, sometimes on waking up I find that some of the images or people that were in the dream I was having are projected into my room and continue to play out for a while. I have also always had a huge elament of prediction in my dreams, with many things I have dreamed about actually presenting themselves to me in one way or another the following day. That said I still want to be able to have lucid dreams that I can control and not find threatening.
