Welcome LightSleeper!
When I LD, I do remember it like it happened in real life. Many of my friends recently asked me about this and this is how I explain it to them, hope this helps for you as well.
When you LD, for that moment its reality to your subconscious because our subconscious is full of rich detail and realization and at a moments glance can produce such things.
When I am sitting in the cafeteria of my school in real life, my mind takes note of everything, all the details. Smells, sound, feeling, and tastes are all recored in my subconscious. Later on in the day, if I think about my time in the cafe, my mind can produce scenes of it. Of course, the scenes produced in the mind wont feel like the actual time in the cafeteria, but those sensations will remain in the memory.
When I am in a regular, non-lucid dream, and the scenery is the cafeteria, the mind still makes these mental notes. It takes into account all the senses that I am currently taking in...smell,sound, touch, etc. In many normal, non-lucid dreams, the senses (besides sight and sound of course) dont really come into play. So when you think of a dream, its in the same fashion as a regular memory, but it lacks the extremem detail like my real life experience in the cafeteria.
When in a LD, the experience is identical (if not more exhillarating) to that of real life. If I have a LD about myself in the cafeteria at my school, ALL of the senses will come into play for me and things out of the ordinary as well. In LDs one thing that you have, which you dont have in reality is FULL CONTROL over almost everything that happens. Remembering things like that is a great sensation. The memory of that, in result, is like an advanced version of a real memory. It includes things that are not possible and still contains all the exquisite detail.
Hope this helped
Happy LDing!!
