Control can be tricky.
I think it's good to get control of the dream scene before trying anything. When you realize you're dreaming, stop, experience the dream as best you can with all your senses so it becomes more vivid. Then go about experimenting.

You can control the clarity of your dream if you are lucid.
You mind is very good at improvising what things feel like.
Yes, you can get better at playing an instrument (the mental part)
