      Random thoughts from a semi-newbie

Hello all. This is certainly a wonderful forum! I have been lurking for a few months now, and decided to finally register and join in on the discussions.

I've had an interest in lucid dreaming for 12 years, but haven't seriously picked it up again until 4 months ago. I bought the book Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming and it has been a fantastic read. I wish that I had read it all those years ago. I probably wouldn't have lost interest (but you know how the teen years can be- you get distracted with a lot of other things). In 4 months I'm averaging about an LD about every 10-14 days. It's a far cry for me, from having only had 3 or 4 in the past decade.

There are a few things I need to work on in my LDs and I hope that the forum will help me as I continue my journey. One thing I cannot do is fly. The first time when I tried in one my early LDs, I simply jumped up, like in real life, and simply landed. I repeated and had the same result. Later on, after reading some posts on this forum and I noticed one person saying that you had to put energy into the act- it simply won't happen if you imagine it. The next LD I had, I tried imagining the energy projecting out through my legs and feet. I could feel it happening in my dream, but the moment I "took off" I woke up. The next LD it was the same thing. Since, I haven't tried flying for fear of waking up. Go figure, just a few days ago in a non-lucid dream, I was flying a bit.

This morning I had an LD, and in it I was outside my house. I tried to enter the house by phasing through the door like a ghost. I put my hand out- bang- hit the door. No matter what I tried doing in my dream, I couldn't go through the door. I just turned the knob and entered. LOL

In reading Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming, I'm wondering if my dream world is holding very closely to the "schema" of the real one, and I'm trying to think of ways to "free my mind" as it were. I'm sure many others here have had this problem. Any comments on this matter would be appreciated.

Sorry for the rambling first post. 8)

I haven't had any real LDs but I have had plenty of flying dreams in the past. My advice, try floating first. Maybe just fall back and believe that you won't hit the ground. Then just sit there. Or you can try taking a step as if you were climbing stairs and see if you can go up in the air. If you get floating down, it's just a matter of moving. I'm not sure if it would work but imagine being Spiderman and swinging inbetween buildings, just without the nets. I don't know, but it might work.

I have never had any trouble with flying myself. That is one of the things I consider is guaranteed to work if I try it, and that belief would be the reason why it always does work.

I do have problems trying out other things in dreams though. I mentioned them yesterday in another post, but to briefly repeat the examples I used there, I couldn't make a rock burst into flame and I couldn't make a castle appear at full size. I'm not sure why the rock didn't burst into flame (as I had done that before), but my theory on the castle appearing at a miniature toy size rather than the full size I was wanting is that I doubted that it would appear at full size. I think it was a bit like Luke in Episode 5 of Star Wars where he didn't believe he could lift something with the force because of its size. I know that is just a fantasy movie, but I think it was a similar thing with this castle. I believed making a life size castle appear in front of me was a lot more difficult than flying or making objects float through the air. So how am I to succeed if deep in my mind I associate different levels of difficulty to these things?

I think with flying, once you succeed the first time, it will get easier and easier. So go into it believing it is easy and that will help.

First of all welcome to Dreamviews!

It seems that you are a very realistic person. I'm sure that all you need is more practice with the dream world. You're hesistant probably because you don't fully believe in your imagination yet.

Take it in slow steps. If you want something, don't make it appear, instead transform something you already have into it. If you want to fly, don't try to hover, imagine an invisible elevator holding you up. Just try different methods getting what you want conventionally without directly trying to do the impossible. With enough experience and conviction you'll be able to free that mind of yours.

      Hi Neo,

I have found in my experience in Lucid Dreaming if you 'Will' something too much your dream world has the habit of doing the opposite of what it is you want , I have found that to get things to happen or materialize you have to 'Intend' it to happen with a sense of expectation and then let the thought go into the the dreamworld ether. Simply put, don't try TOO hard. If you follow this method I am sure you will see the positive results you desire.
