Lucid dreams can be a great place to practice things for waking life. I use LDs for things like this often.

I would suggest, just because you can't take a "magical potion" in waking life, that you use LDs to practice speaking. Also try to discover why you stutter, then to deal with the reasons.

Using LDs to talk directly to your subconscous mind (which I bet is responsible for the sutter) is a great way to deal with psychological issues. Try to make friends with your subconsous. See what it has to say directly, and in the symbols and events of your dream.

I have a cousin who used to stutter. He said that when he slows down, takes a deep breath, it can help.

Good luck! You can do it!

      Welcome to DV!

Seeker28 has some great advice there. Once lucid, start talking to dream characters. Even though they are not real, it sure helps, I overcame my fear of performing in front of people by practicing in lucid dreams.

I have the issue where I talk way too fast and stumble on my words around people. And I fidget. With LD, I hope I can get better at talking to people as well as trying in my waking life to work on it at the same time.

What I've been doing that helps is going out with someone I'm comfortable with (my mom) and just being around people. I know if I talk to someone, I may look nervous or act funny, but my mom always assures me (with a confused face) that I act fine, and "anyways, it doesn't matter what other people think". In this day and age, everyone has problems big and small. They're less likely to care about me fidgeting a lot than they are thinking about when they're going to get off work (if they're at the store).

And of course, I know my boundaries. I can only handle so many strangers at a time.

I think- no, I know, we can both improve.

      (Sorry for rambling, seriously!)

I have a cousin, who had trouble talking to people, so he just started going up to random people (in a safe environment) and just introduced himself. Maybe you could do the same sorta thing in an LD. Start talking to everyone you see, and maybe do it in real life after some practice

Gah, I would never be able to do that in RL. It's much easier to do with people I'm familiar with. But walking up to a random person who will only look at me funny (wondering who I am and what I want) would just make it worse if I want to practice.

But I suppose everyone is different.

A friend of mine overcame his stuttering problem by imagining himself as an actor in a play. That is, he wasn't himself struggling in conversation, but an actor saying his lines deliberately and confidently. He would pause for his line and then deliver it. He says he got the idea from a singer who famously stuttered but sang flawlessly, and the fact that he himself could do things like read aloud and recite poetry with no problems. It's pretty cool, because he always has this thoughtful pause before he speaks and it makes everything he says seem profound. He says it's second nature now.

My brother has stuttering problems. He also loves music and singing because he doesn't stutter while singing.

I would be interested to find out if you stutter in your lucid dreams. If not, maybe you can practice talking in your dreams, and then remember the feeling when you wake up to put yourself in the same state of mind.

There's no need to get nervous when talking to people...they are more concerned with how they are coming off than they are with judging you. Try to focus on making others feel comfortable. One way to do this is to observe the energy that people display and communicate with them in a similar manner. This makes them more comfortable talking to you, and you can't help but feel more confident... And if you do stutter, who cares? So does everybody from time to time.

      Now that's an interesting idea.

I've actually done a bit of 'acting' myself. When I go out sometimes, I'll try acting confident, like I don't give a care in the world, etc. While this may make me look egotistical, it does make me feel able to deal with the stress a little easier. Until I get home, and then I'm wore out.

But if I did small things while I was out, I think eventually it would become part of me.
