Thread: first night...no LD, but...

like 10 minutes after I went to bed, I started thinking about everything I saw on this site, even though I didn't understand most of it. About 5 minutes later, I cant explain the feeling, but I could tell that I was sortof dreaming AND awake at the same time. When I thought of something in my head, they seemed WAY more real than just thoughts. I got nervous/excited before it turned into a dream

Is this good for the first night of trying?

Also, I woke up again at about 3am. I read somewhere that another method for LD is doing something, I forgot, after 6-8 hours of sleep. What is it

I can't really comment on the feeling of being awake and asleep at the same time, that's never really happened to me as far as I can recall. A better way of measuring success when starting is by how many dreams you recall per night, how long they are, and how vivid they are. Keep a dream journal if you aren't already.

Waking up in the middle of the night after 6-8 hours of sleep is called a Wake Back To Bed. Most people do those with WILDs, where you lay still and try to go directly from being awake into being in a dream(I've never successfully WILDed before, so I'm not really one to comment on the subject.) Doing a plain WBTB is good for inducing lucid dreams as well. Some people find it better when doing a WBTB to stay up for a while, sometimes up to 90 minutes. I just stay up long enough to turn my alarm off and go back to sleep. It's best to just try trial and error to find what works for you. I recently had two very long and vivid lucids as a result from WBTBs.

It sounds like you are describing the transition to sleep, and hypnagogic imagery. When I pay attention as I fall asleep, I find my thoughts start to develop into brief 'dreamlets'. They get more and more vivid, until I get so caught up, I lose my sense of self and fall unconscious. Pay attention to how this works, and you should have a better understanding of how all the WILD techniques out there are designed to trick yourself into doing this consciously.

I get that a lot in class

cause im a very light sleeper but when i'm really tired i sortof half fall asleep like you said. I've heard that it is still posible to dream in states of sleep before REM sleep, but it is far less vivid, which is what i've always assumed this was.

It's amusing though when you wake up and for a moment you don't realise that you've been dreaming. That's what happens to me in class all the time.
