Wink Ahoy! new guy here... need some help :)

Hey everyone! just another new guy here. Quite recently I have been getting into the concept of lucid dreaming. When I first found this site I spent like a whole day reading each section and checking out the forums lol. I have just ordered 'Exploring The World Of Lucid Dreaming' to help in my studies. I have been keeping a dream journal for about two weeks now and I have already had what I would consider a semi lucid dream?

Anyway I just want to ask this question on WILD's. I have been trying the WILD technique ever since I got myself into lucid dreaming. I can get to the point where I enter SP and here audio and see HI. After awhile the vibrations stop and everying goes back to normal (no HI or sounds). I still lay still. After it stops does this mean I have failed? or Do I have to keep counting breathes and so on after SP? if so... what happens next? a dream scene appears? I'm not sure lol

      Hi and welcome,

WILDs differ from person to person. I've never had a normal WILD like you describe so I wouldn't know. SP and Hypnagogic hallucinations sure are a sign that you're getting there. In my case the hallucinations increase in complexity the closer I am to a dream and after that I just fall into the dream.

You said that it all stops. Are you sure that you weren't in a dream, experiencing a False Awakening? Do a RC just in case if this happens again. I guess all you can do is stay still and stay conscious. Maybe try some visualization techniques if this doesn't work.

It's very strange... I feel my body in SP and I have all the signs and then after like 30 seconds or so... it all just stops and I feel that i remain back to normal. It feels toooo real for it to be a dream but I will RC next time. Is it possible to do this and not be in REM? if soooo this could be the case? (even though I do it after a good few hours of sleep)

How long do these WILD sessions last? You know, maybe it's just your timing. Maybe you're just waiting untill the REM stage runs out. I really don't know. Just experiment and see how it goes. Combine different techniques. MILDs, HITs, etc.

      to DVs!
Yeah, it sounds like you were very close to WILDing but if you said it all stopped, then you were either dreaming or you awoke from reaction (excitement, shock, etc.). This happens a lot of times to just about everybody who tries to WILD (myself included). The thing is, you cannot let your body know that you're still conscious when entering SP; and emotions like excitement/shock always tip our bodies off to cancel SP once even if we've gotten that far. I think that its the sudden awareness of SP that startles us a bit and causes some type of reaction whether it be excitement, shock or something else.
Whatever the case, the key to getting past this is practice and control. You have to continue practicing this in order to become used to SP and how it feels. Eventually, you'll realize that the trick to making it all the way is trying to ignore any significant changes in SP (controlling your emotions). You have to sort of acknowledge what's going on around you w/o reacting suddenly in any way (becoming startled or excited) ; or else that signal that you're not unconscious yet is going to be sent to your body delaying SP. But anybody will tell you, practice is the best way of mastering this technique.
And like Bonsay already said, it never hurts to add other techniques to this one.
I also have a little tutorial on WILDing that some have found useful, hopefully you will too!

      1. Get at least 5 to 6 hours of sleep (WBTB). (optional)

      2. Devote at least 2 hours (or more) to WILDing.(optional)

      3. Remember your goal (where you want to go, what you want to do, etc).

      4. Dismiss any other thoughts and focus only on taking slow, deep breaths.

      5. Remain COMPLETELY still, no matter what.

      6. Try to steer clear of straying/abstract thoughts when entering SP (random/abstract thoughts means that the logical part of your brain is falling asleep, dont let it!). (they can also cause you to enter a non-Lucid Dream which would make all this work was for nothing!)

      7. Dont fight or resist SP in any way / stay relaxed and calm when it begins to happen.

      8. Continue to focus only on your (slow, deep) breathing as vibrations, Hypnagogic Imagery, and auditory hallucinations become more intense from SP.

(you can focus on and/or visualize your goal once you think you've got the breathing part down packed).

      9. Continue step 8 until you feel that sudden rush of spinning and/or falling through your bed or ceiling (in my case); this should mean that SP is complete, and hence you are ready to dream.

      10. If you are not already in a dream scene, then spin around or rub your hands together (or both) in order to conjure up one. Doing this can also stabilize a fading/blurry dream scene.

There you have it, those are pretty much all the steps I take when Im attempting a WILD. And if it doesnt work the first time, remember that it takes time so dont give up! I know it seems like a lot, but once you've been through it many times, you will become better and better at it.
Another thing, out of curiosity, did you do the WILD w/ a WBTB?
