      ooo i'm new too

      Hey there,

Well to start off a little bit about me, I'm 17 years old and I live in Kent which is in England. I go to college where I'm training to be a counsellor, I guess I'm not really your social norm but what's normal? I prefer to spend my time improving my self rather than go drinking on a friday night ect. and I have an interest in all thing dealing with the mind

      right now onto my question

I didn't really used to remember my dreams up until the last month which i've been getting vivid dreams that I can remember ( also my twin brother said the same)

the thing is though I try and record them into my dream diary but it's just quite hard holding onto the memories there's just a brief period when i can remember them and then there suddenly gone if you get my meaning.

So does anyone have any advice on how I can overcome this problem?

      Thanks very much in advance!

      Welcome to DV.

On your recall issue: There is no rush to get them on paper straight away. I recommend trying to go through the events in your dream (in your head), chronologically (I usually do this backwards, because I often remember events closer to waking with more clarity, so I can build from that). After you have gone through your dream in your head, it should then be safer to try to write it down. I find that while I am writing, some additional little details usually present themselves to me without effort.

The reason that this could work is that our brains seem to have some kind of inbuilt bias towards forgetting dream memories, which often makes it hard to 'hold on' to a recalled dream. By recalling your dream again while awake, you make a waking memory of the dream, which seems to be noticeably easier to maintain.

YMMV, of course, but this works for me.

archdreamer offers some great advice. I personally find that I have a better chance of hanging on to my dream memories if I stay in bed for a few extra minutes just going over my dream(s) before I write them down. I keep a notebook under my pillow so when I awake during the night I can write down my dream then.
